I was accepted last year to UCLA biz econ, but decided to stay an extra year at my community college so I could reapply as a math/econ major. I can answer questions.

i made a thread you can answer

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/825173-c-pre-req-fatal.html

What’s your gpa overall and do you have W grades on your transcripts? Thank you.

No, I didn’t have any W’s. I had a 3.93 gpa, the one B was in a random business class I took my freshmen first semester. I also didn’t have tap, because my school doesn’t offer it.

I honestly think it was my essay that got me in, it was damn good. If you think about it, everyone has nearly perfect grades, you need to distinguish yourself from the crowd on a personal level.

Why did you turn down the offer? Couldn’t you have transferred started the upper div econ and finish up your required math there? Then easily change majors later? Or was it personal issues that made you turn down the offer?

No, I emailed the math department, they said you can’t change majors that late in the game (after the extra year I pre reqs I needed). Besides, I could spend $0 at my community college for a year of math courses, or $30,000 at UCLA.

Do you think if I moved to a cc with TAP and did an extra year and signed a TAP, then i could get in, even though i have a C in calc 1?

I’ve heard the opposite, they will let you switch majors once you get there as long as it is in the same college (L&S) or w/e. even biz econ, you just have to have a 3.9 to switch into that major. I am applying to math/econ w/o the last semester of calc or intro to object oriented programming. damn programming class is only offered at like 7pm at night.

What kind of extra-cirricular activities did you state on your application? Are extra-ciriculars really that important? Is just some volunteering and a job enough?

My opinion on extra curriculars is that not having them will hurt you, but as long as you have something, you’re ok. I definitely didn’t have anything overly impressive on my apps, except 100+ hours with a state law enforcement agency. Thats kinda unrelated to the major, so it probably didn’t make much of a difference. I also had an accounting internship with a local county audit department.

Saditydc - I didn’t say you can’t switch majors, in fact you can pretty easily(provided the major is not impacted), however, my problem was I needed a ton of pre_reqs and they don’t like that. Oh, and no you can’t switch into biz econ from another major, they specifically have a rule against. Imagine that you could, who would apply as a biz econ major considering the average admit has a 3.85+ gpa.

Srjc, I noticed on the assit page for UCLA they say, “The calculus course requirements should be met as early as possible.” I would really like to hold off calc until the last two quarters before I transfer. Would this affect my transfer chances? I’m a pretty solid ccc student (4.0, good ECs, etc).

OP, did u apply to haas? if u did, did u get in?

I applied to the UCs as a math major, but decided to stay at my JC for an extra year and apply as a math/econ major too. Did you apply to SB and SD as well?

Why did you choose math econ over biz econ?

I chose math/econ over biz econ because I really enjoy math and want to attend graduate school for economics. If I get into berkeley I might even do pure math.
