Any questions from incoming Freshman?
Oh yeah how much do u guys know about learning communities(I was in cnas community)

This may be obvious to some, but never buy books from the school!!!
That was my biggest mistake first quarter.
I spent hundreds of dollars and could have saved at least one hundred.
for example
bio book ucr 190 amazon 120
As far as I know, the incoming bio/chem/neuro majors have it made. They can buy textbooks from current year students(we had to buy them brand new!).
Theres also a place of campus called the UBE(university book exhange) that sells new and used books, and is a cheap alternative.
Most of all, dont get so excited to buy your textbooks now! I know they are really cheap
but you may end up buying the wrong edition.

don’t the FAFSA cover books and supplies? I think mine does.

well it doesnt for evryone. I only recieved 300 per quarter and books can cost 300 each so i didnt have enough.
the school doesnt give u credit for books in case you are wondering.
they give you a refund check and you cash it and buy stuff with it
plus the money you dont use you can keep and buy whatever you want so thats a plus!.

How much would taking 4 classes cost? compared to the average given by the GROWL website

minimum like 2800, of course this is just the cost of classes and not books and supplies.

what did you do during the bear facts orientation?

What happens if you took one a Fine art class at a jc but your enrolled in CHASS first which also places you in a fine art. Can you drop it

I plan to major in Bio, but i’m enrolled in CHASS. I need to change over to CNAS. Help on that topic?

Another question: I accidentally enrolled into orientation for only CHASS. Can i still enroll in CNAS classes during the orientation? And what will i miss from the CNAS orientation?

verynervous3
u dont need much
well i took some toiletries( travel size shampoo soap and toothbrus hairbrush)
a change of clothes
bring comfortable shoes as there will be running!!!
evrything else is basically provided

jason
typically if u take a course that relates to ur major at a jc it doesnt count towards ur major, but im not a hundred percent sure. Just email ur advisor, they are happy to help!

Andrew
Just email ur advisor or once school starts go to the office of academic affairs for cnas or chass and you will meet with ur advisor and she will give u the required paperwork

yeah u can enroll in cnas classes while in in a chass orientation.
one question: is the orientation cnas and chass or just chass only??
the only thing u will miss is meeting some people who are in the same major as u, the opportunity to be in a science learning community, and meeting head of the departments in science

Jason2009:
I was in CHASS Connect (one of the CHASS F1RST programs); it is difficult to drop because it is “contracted” (although there is nothing that you actually sign). You have to have a good reason to drop out of the sequence. Saying that you already have fulfilled a breadth requirement probably won’t be a good enough reason. They’ll reason that it will fill up an extra Literature/Fine Arts/Philosophy class anyway.

AndrewLim:
I’m guessing all the non-Honors orientations are the same in terms of activities; it’s just organized into the different colleges. You can enroll in any class (there are no “CHASS only” or “CNAS only” classes). I think the main problem is that you won’t be able to meet with the Biology academic adviser. Like luckycharms949 said, you can turn in paperwork to change it.

luckycharms949:
The orientations are organized into “CHASS only” and “CNAS and BCOE only.”

Kind of a general question, but:How hard is college? And how can I be successful?I was an “AP/Honors” kid (albeit at the lower end of that spectrum) and I just want a comparison or a feel of what I should expect.I’m majoring in Political Science. I did really good in AP Government and all my history classes throughout the years.

what are good teachers for math like math 005 and math 9a

Jeffrey99:
I was an AP/Honors kid in high school too, also on the lower part of the spectrum. :p

Since you have a good talent for history, I say that you would do well. But I also realized that you have to have a real interest and motivation to learn about your subject. Professors like students who take their academics seriously. It seems obvious, but you’d be surprised that like in high school, there are still people in college who just don’t care or are out “just for grades.”

College is a big change in environment because academics are taken seriously here (by some professors, anyway). Professors dedicate a significant amount of time to JUST learning by doing research. You can tell the difference between professors that only teach and professors who actually care about students learning.

Just stay focused on your academics and don’t waste your time and money. Socialize and join clubs too. Just make sure to balance it out.

I can’t really give you advice on studying because everyone has a different approach to that. But I’ll say that if you need help understanding something, you have to ask for it because professors could really care less.

Oh, and take all kinds of different classes! I originally wanted to be an English major, but now I’m a double major with Anthropology and Film and Visual Culture.

i’m in for environmental science
but if i want to become a dermatologist do i still stay in CNAS?
what are the requirements i have to fulfill?
where can i change my major?

not sure about where to go for dermatology, although I’m sure it doesn’t go under CHASS or BCOE…

you can look up the bachelor degree requirements on the CNAS website, just google it

If you wanna change your major, it’s really easy during orientation-just ask your advisor before you register for classes

i read on a different topic that for intramural sports you just make a team with friends but do you know if you can just be randomly assigned to a team when the first season starts? (specifically soccer). I wanna get back to soccer asap.

i think u can, check out this page

Jaesango I think BIO or neuroscience ( how ever its spelled) can work
