Any questions?

Hey
I’m a first year at Bates now, and I know how much CC helped me last year…so if anyone has any questions about anything at Bates, ask and I’ll do my best to answer.
Good luck to all.

It's very kind of you to offer help, doubleplay361 :) I am an international student applying to Bates EDII. I really like the school, but unfortunately I couldn't visit... How do you find the atmosphere in campus? Are people open and friendly?
I'm thinking of sending a supplementary essay to Bates. I know you are not in admissions:) but what do you think about it?

I have others questions, but they'll come later :)

Hey Vesselina

I'm certainly a bit biased (I did choose Bates over Colby, Hamilton, Colgate, Vassar, and Bucknell), but I'd say the atmosphere on campus is what really sets Bates apart from other schools. People are really friendly; if you say "hi" to 10 random people on the quad, all 10 will probably say hi back (maybe 4 of them will have said hi before you). It isn't like that at other schools.

People at Bates tend to be really approachable, including the deans and president.
When I made my choice about schools, I did it less based on academics (tons of the northeast LACs have great faculties, tho the econ department at Bates certainly statnds out), and more on the atmosphere at Bates. People just tend to be nice...it seems like all the jerks from high school just didn't bother applying to Bates!

As long as your guidance counselor (or other adviser) thinks your supp essay is a good piece of work, I'd go ahead and submit it. My philosophy is that anything that has the potential to make your app stand out (in a good way!) is worth including.

Hope that helps. Anything else, shoot away.

Thank you for coming back and participating, DoublePlay. (Btw, were you the 3, the 6, or the 1?) It's nice if CC can be a resource where prospective students can talk to current students, particularly for the LAC's, which tend not to be as well known as the other schools.

I have a client who went to Bates and she's extremely enthusiastic about the education she received there.

Hello,
I am also an international applying to Bates. I got deferred Early Decision. Do you know if Bates does courtesy deferrals or it rolls over only people who would really have a chance of getting in?

Which of the 3 Maine schools throws the best parties?

Thanks, Jason:)

You described Bates just as I had imagined it to be. Unfortunately, I could never visit the campus, and it is very hard to feel the atmosphere of a college without having been there. You were accepted to some wonderful schools and the fact that you preffered Bates to others certainly matters to me. I really like the place but I sometimes feel very dishearted knowing how slim my chances are being an international student... I believe the fact that I need substantial fin aid further complicates matter.
Anyway, I recently found some photos of Bates campus and students on webshots and they seemed very funny :) Do you often have such wild parties ;)
As for the additional essay, I decided to send it since my principal (we don't have guidance counselors in Bulgaria) advised me to do so. She is actually a literature teacher, and I take her opinion on such matters.

Oh, by the way, do you know if there are some Bulgarians in Bates? Asking simply out of curiosity :)

Vessy

Hey

Sorry it's been a while since I've had a chance to post. Thanks Dad; I was 361 (I think), but I lost the password. Yeah, it does seem as though the LACs get a bit neglected online when compared to the bigger schools.

Bogororo, I really don't know about the deferal policy. I'll ask around at school--I know there are a few who got in after being deferred ED--and try to get a feel for how common it is. Sorry 'bout that deferal--no fun at all. But there's tons of good places out there, really. So don't let it get you too down.

Wildcatdude, I'd have to say Bates...but then again, I'm sure I'm kind of biased. Having a rugby guy on my floor helps--those kids are crazy. A lot of upperclassman party hard in the houses--tho it can be hard (sometimes) to get in as a freshman guy. First years are more in the dorms. As long as you are sipping Jack in the hall, security tends to be very chill. Not like Colby, where there's a $150 fine whenever security sees an open container. And as far as I know, no where else has trick-or-drink.

Vessy, my floor had a pretty cool Christmas party...I'll try to find some pics for you! Nice about the essay...I'm sure it won't hurt. Good luck! They'd be crazy not to let you in...and I know some stuff is changing with respect to financial aid...hopefully that'll help.

I think I know one kid whose Bulgarian, though he lived in Portland, Maine for a year or two before coming to Bates. Is Hristo Mintchev a Bulgarian name?

J

Hristo Mintchev certainly is a Bulgarian name:) Do you happen to have his e-mail?
