Hi everyone. My younger brother just got into Cornell ED and he's really excited and has been asking me hundreds of questions. He is always on this board and told me to check it out. So if you guys have any questions about Cornell that you want to ask me then feel free. I'm open to anything and love talking about Cornell-related stuff so ask away.

If I forgot to mention it, I'm a junior at Cornell.

do you recommend random roommates or meeting through a mutual friend?
how hard are the science classes?
do grades intermix (ie: freshmen + junior)
what computer should i get?

thanks!

1) I recommend a random roommate unless you are 100% sure that you and your mutual friend won't end up hating each other by the end of the year. However, the problem with a random roommate is that you can end up with some super religious person like my friend did. I would say to apply for a single and see what happens.

2) I'm an ILR major so I don't know anything about science classes. But many of my pre-med friends say that science (pre-med courses specifically) are difficult.

3) Yeah of course they mix. You'll have classes with upperclassmen possibly and you'll see them at the gym and stuff. And if you join a fraternity/sorority then you'll know people in every grade. Freshmen all live together on North campus so there aren't really many upper classmen on North unless they are eating at RPCC or because their fraternity/sorority is in North campus.

4) Get a Mac. I got one for college and I love it. I would say about 40% of Cornellians have macs.

any other questions?

1.Im majoring in government in CAS. How difficult will the courseload be and what is the admittance rate into law school from CAS? Also can i still take ILR classes?

Should i bring my car to Cornell? Its a 01 mazda 626.

I'd like to join the debate team. How/When should i attempt to do this?

1) One of my good friends is a government major and he has a 3.8GPA. Most liberal arts majors aren't that hard if you stay on top of your work. I don't know what the admittance rate to law school is. It doesn't matter though as long as you have a strong GPA and do well on your LSATs. And yes of course you can take ILR classes. Some government classes are even cross-listed with ILR courses.

2) I wouldn't bring a car freshmen year. There really isn't anywhere to drive because everything you ever need is on North Campus and it's not as if you can drive to class. If you live in Collegetown or a fraternity/sorority sophomore year and beyond then its definitely nice to have a car.

3) You should attempt near the time classes start. There will be flyers all around for tryouts and stuff. Look up the president of the Debate team on rso.cornell.edu and then shoot him and email letting him know you're interested.

Do engineering students have time to join frats?

How difficult is the workload for someone doing two engineering majors? Do many people do this?

Yeah there are about 8-10 engineering majors in my fraternity.

Engineering itself is difficult, so I assume double-majoring in the Engineering school would be pretty tough. I doubt many people do this.
