If you have any reguarding admission to Kenyon, feel free to ask. I am a '07 grad who played football, active in Greek life and wrote for the student paper. I am currently a Military officer serving on active duty.

I love Kenyon and remain attached to my four years there. I hope to provide insight to anyone who hopes to spend four years on the Hill.

Kenyon has an amazing reputation for academics, but it also has a reputation of having a very active social (drinking) scene. How true is that? How prominent are the Greeks? Will a student who doesn’t participate in drinking or greek life feel out of place?

I was a poli sci and econ major. Gambier is a great place and we all got along pretty well. Don’t be a jerk and you are fine. In fact, some of residents are very, very nice. My wife to be even meet with some local farmers who opened their home to her.

As far as drinking, you are welcomed even if you do not drink. I mean, I chose not to drink during the first semester of my freshman year and I had a ball. Just get a solid group of friends and you will have a great time.

As another recent alumn who did not really drink at Kenyon, I can say that you are welcome to participate in all avenues of the social scene regardless of your personal choices on drinking. I was a member of a group known for many of the social activities being centered around drinking, and yet I NEVER felt out of place for not drinking.

Kenyon is definitely a very social campus, but social is not synonymous with alcohol or any other substances. To echo kenyondomer, I too had a ball! From big dance parties to small get togethers, it’s always fun. It’s the people that make Kenyon the place it is.

The nice thing about Gambier is that much of the town is connected to Kenyon (staff, faculty, alumni, children are tutored by students at Wiggin Street Elementary, etc.) They are choosing to be a part of the Gambier/Kenyon community just as much as the students choose to be there. It’s a strong relationship, but the key is (again, as kenyondomer said,) don’t be a jerk. If you are a respectful neighbor and keep in mind that you aren’t just a student but a Gambier resident, you’ll be welcomed into the community.

Masterbraz, I believe they are being sent out sometime “after feb 1” so it could be any time this week. One would assume they would send an email the same day they mail it though.

Allow me to correct my earlier post. They use First Class Mail and will not inform you ahead of time. It takes 1-3 days normally, but if you’re in the middle of nowhere or in a highly urban area it may take longer (or if they’re delayed for some reason). They count Saturdays but not Sundays, as far as I know.

Could you address the school’s greek life a little more? It seems strange that such an intellectual, small school would have a prominent greek life…is that true at all? If so, is it an exclusive scene, or does it not influence the campus much at all?

Hi kenyondomer. I was wondering how the food is at Kenyon. I’ve heard that we don’t need food cards, but when I visited I didn’t exactly see were the food came from in Pierce. I know of the few cafes in Gambier, but how is the food in the actual dining hall? Andddd I’ve been looking everywhere to find this but I can’t- what are the “quiet hours”/what is the curfew at Kenyon? I was at BGSU with my boyfriend today and they don’t have one considering the fact that the school is too big to monitor student activity that closely. But I’m worried that they do at Kenyon =/

driftwood, in terms of the party scene on campus, greek life (aka frats – sororities are pretty powerless sadly) does have a noticeable influence on campus. while it is true that people can do other things and not attend a frat party; most people do.

kenyon used to be all male until 1970s? and supposedly way back when, all males at kenyon were in some sort of frat. even those that werent… were somehow grouped into a type of frat. — kenyon has long ties to certain frats; even though were do not have frat houses on south campus many of your dormitories ‘belong’ to certain frats. they get chunks of rooms reserved for them… and if you haven’t visited kenyon before, their names/symbols are engraved on the entrances.

rainbowfish,

you pay for your food at the dining hall as part of your tuition … or room & board. people can just walk in, either however much they want. food more or less sucks in peirce … they have good night… but they also have a lot of bad ones. my defense for them is that i think they are still adjusting to certain changes (student demands, employee shifts – this one really affects the quality of food that avi (company in charge of our food) produces)

quiet hours start after 2am on wkends (i cant remember if weekdays it is 12am… or 2). during finals week we are on 24 hr quiet hrs. it is not really a curfew… you can be late out as long as you want; just dont be too disruptive inside. it’s really a big deal. just yesterday i was up til 6+ am (kind of being loud) w/ some friends… and from 2-6am all the ‘trouble’ we got was someone telling us to be a little quieter when we were being loud in the lounge. once inside my room… we were kind of loud (oops) and it was fine.

CAs (community advisors) aka RAs enforce this; at any point in time (between north and south campus) i believe there are 4 CAs “on duty” (taking a 8pm - 8am shift). also security officers may enforce it too?

The food is really not that bad. It gets a lot of flack because there are “experimental” dishes that aren’t so great. But they always have decent salad, cereal, sandwiches, and bagels/toast. If you go at the beginning of each meal the head chefs are cooking and so the food is REALLY GOOD, but later when they have the normal workers cooking the food can get very bland or overcooked. Hope that helps!
