Any reviews on this school?

I’m planning to apply to Clarkson. So if anyone knows anything please post!

Most of the information I am finding online tends to be dated, and a great deal of it is negative. I’m not going to have my son take it off his list at this point, but we will definitely try to squeeze a visit in.

My son is a freshman there and is thrilled with the choice. Also, seeing things like this article [12 Colleges Whose Job Payoff Is Better Than Harvard - ABC News](<a href=“12 Colleges Whose Payoff In Pay Beats Harvard's - ABC News”>12 Colleges Whose Payoff In Pay Beats Harvard's - ABC News) also make a parent a bit more at ease in terms of what awaits them after graduation :)

About 8 of sons’ high school classmates attend (including the salutatorian who had a perfect ACT score)and they all love it. Most of them were in the robotics club in high school. We have several adult friends who graduated from Clarkson and they are gainfully employed and very positive about their time at Clarkson. Also, a newly hired physics prof at son’s state school graduated from Clarkson. Clarkson seems to be doing many things right.

Thanks! How is the area around there? Cold all season? any local clinics/ hospitals and restaurants?

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to that town, but Potsdam is a cute town with the classic homes you see on New England post cards. The weather can be cold in the winter. You’re in the bottom of the St. Lawrence Valley, which is wind swept, and not far from Canada. The Adirondacks are a little south - the Adirondack Park starts 10 miles south. They’re gorgeous, and actually a bit warmer, because they don’t get as much wind. There is a hospital in town. If you hate outdoor activities, this school might not be for you.

Can’t tell you about restaurants, but you must be richer than I was when I went to college, because we never had money for restaurants. SUNY/Potsdam is a couple miles away, so there are lots of college students in town (SUNY Potsdam is 60% women, which can balance out the high male percentage at Clarkson). Ten miles away, there are two more colleges, St. Lawrence and SUNY/Canton (mostly a 2-year school). Not sure how four colleges wound up in an area so remote.

An executive I met at their hospital told me that outside of the town, the people are fairly poor, and the biggest industry in the county is agriculture.
