Any schools really similar to William and Mary?

I am in love with William and Mary but lets be honest it's not easy to get into no college is I love the campus and how all the students are nice friendly go getter personalities studies is important to everyone there but they have enormous school spirit and still have fun I love everything about it but I want to look at some other schools very similar to it just in case

There’s a search button at the top of the page:

We have not yet visited, but have been told by a few folks that my kid should consider UNC-Asheville and College of Charleston. We’ve been told both have the “southern” hospitality feel, residential community, walking town. Both are easier OOS admits than W & M

I have heard that University of Mary Washington is often used as a backup for instate students who like W&M. I have no direct experience with it though beyond looking at the website.

Universities with school spirit (d1 sports), solid academics, and like to have fun, but not uber competitive for admissions…

Miami OH
Boston College
Lehigh
Bucknell
TCU
Tulane
Gonzaga
Butler
Holy cross
Richmond

I agree with the CofC suggestion. Maybe St. Mary’s College of Maryland, too?

I wouldn’t consider school spirit to be WM’s greatest asset, though. I have known many students (mostly boys) over the years that have been disappointed with that aspect of the school, specifically regarding the lack of student support shown at various sports events. One kid we know actually considered transferring to JMU because of it (his parents talked him out of it eventually). He told me that the ratio of alums/students at the fball games is not what he expected. Everyone has different ideas about it, though, and all things considered it isn’t the most important part of your UG experience.

Okay, just off the top of my head, Tulane is NOTHING like W&M! Colonial Williamsburg vs NOLA? No. Lehigh is also not going to be a great swap for W&M due to the ‘work hard, party harder’ atmosphere that dominates. W&M students have a rep for being on the more serious side.

Holy Cross and Bucknell would be 2 good choices. Holy Cross has a very nice campus 1 hour from Boston and has tremendous school spirit.

Haystack,

Boston College is and has been among the “most selective” colleges nationwide, whereas I believe none of the others on your list are.

If OP really loves W&M and financial aid is not an issue she should definitely apply ED since the ED acceptance rate was 48%. By the way several of the other schools recommended were certainly no easier to get into than W&M this year…Overall admission rates for 2012 were Richmond 30%, Lehigh 32%, Boston College 28%, Bucknell 27% and William & Mary 31%. (Source NY Times)

This depends on what you like about W&M. University of Mary Washington is a good suggestion. Washington and Lee might be, also.

Wake Forest would be a good W&M comparable on the private side.

Washington & Lee is a great school with a very unique social atmosphere that is much different from William & Mary. It is overwhelmingly Greek with 80% of students participating. W&M has approx 30% participation in Greek life. This is neither ‘good’ nor ‘bad’ it is simply a significant difference that the OP would need to take into consideration when deciding if it is another school to consider.

Thank you so much to everyone suggestion
Also i am an international school student I have gone to a different high school every year and I heard wake forest is not very good about welcoming international students

Furman would be a good backup to W&M. More conservative politically but a very nice school.
