Any schools with good Sanskrit AND Engineering programs?

I'm a rising Sophomore looking into colleges and along with Engineering, I LOVE Sanskrit. I took it in India for 3 years (before moving to United States) and would love to continue studying it.

Are there any universities that have a good South Asian studies and Engineering Departments (in United States)?

The only Indian university that seems to have this is the Hindu Benaras University (but it requires the JEE - which can only be taken in India).

I read an article on TimesOfIndia about the state of Minnesota thinking* about establishing a South Asian Studies department in their flagship University of Minnesota (at Twin Cities** I believe).

It's apparently still a bill in the legislature...

** Or something along those lines...

University of Michigan is one of the best engineering schools in the nation and has a pretty good South Asian studies department.

Thanks, this is great. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) is one of the schools I'm considering. The Asian Languages Minor sounds awesome!

Harvard:

http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~sanskrit/
http://www.seas.harvard.edu/

Wisconsin
http://www.southasia.wisc.edu/langstudy.htm

Thanks Scipio and Barrons. I don't believe Harvard is that good for Engineering, is it? Weird Wisconsin has Telugu but no Tamil (with the latter being more widely acknowledged!).

So Barrons, is the certificate like a minor?

Harvard is not bad, it's ranked 30th I believe, but it's not on the level of Michigan and other elite engineering universities.

Berkeley has a South and South East Asian Studies Department which (if I'm reading this rightly) offers you the chance to study Sanskrit. Be advised though that admission to Berkeley if you are out of state is very competitive, and if you are international is even more so.

http://ls.berkeley.edu/dept/sseas/programs/major_program.html

Aw! I'm both k_twin (but I'm sure only International applies)...hopefully the Green Card will come through in about 2 years!

Thanks GatorEng! I'm not Harvard material anyway...

UT-Austin is strong in both

University of Pennsylvania

I think Northwestern is your best bet for this combination. Penn might also be a very good choice. Brown is the only place where people actually major in Sanskrit but they don't have a real engineering program except in biomed. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Washington have good engineering programs and offer majors in South Asian Languages or South Asian Studies. Harvard offers Sanskrit and a major in South Asian languages but they don't have a real pre-professional engineering program.

Thanks everyone. I'll look into Northwestern as well (UT-Austin is already on my radar).

I second Berkeley; top in Engineering, very good in Sanskrit.

Between a major and a minor.

I'll look into Berkeley too. Sorry barrons, I don't understand what you're saying.

It has fewer requirements than a major and more than a minor. UW does not have minors for UG.

UT Austin 10 char

Couldn't you continue in Sanskrit without majoring in it? Columbia has good engineering and also offers Sanskrit. You might also look at MIT for engineering with the possibility of taking Sanskrit courses at Harvard.

Oh ok Thanks Barrons. Hmm...You're right sac I could do that. I didn't even think of cross registering. Thanks!
