Any shot??

WM in strong public MA school; 3.35gpa out of 4.0 (3/4 classes taken at Honors level and 3 APs this year); 700M/610CR/540W; 690MathI SATII, 650USHistory SATII; pres. of language club (2ys); varsity golf (4ys); few other ec’s, work at law firm during summers; father/grandfather alums; not applying for fin. aid.

Applying as Classics major – do I have any shot?

Thanks.

Honestly, I think your chances of getting in are on the low side. Your gpa could be higher and while your math score is good, the reading and writing are subpar for BC. Also, being a white male from massachusetts isn't going to help much. The only thing that really makes you stand out is that you're a classics major. Good luck!

BTW, some other great schools in your range that might be more feasible are: Loyola College (Maryland), Northeastern, Clark U, and Fordham U.

I agree with elmtree. Low chance but you never know! BC has gotten so competitive. Good luck.

There's always a "shot" but it's a small one. If you really feel that BC is a good fit for you, go ahead and apply, but you need to realize that it is a "reach" school for you and you should have some more realistic schools on your list. Your test scores and your GPA (unweighted?) are definitely on the low side for BC admits. You especially need to get the writing score up into the 650+ range in order to be competitive. Do you think you could do better on a retake? Or maybe you could try the ACT; many students do better with that type of test than the SAT.

Thanks for all of your thoughts. Am taking the ACT this morning and will hope for the best. I realize BC is a real reach but think maybe I'll give it a shot anyway. I really like BU and hope that it is a more realistic goal -- any thoughts on Boston University chances?

You have more of a chance at BU, but I'd say that that's a slight reach/match.

Do you think I'll have a better chance since I'm not applying for financial aid and I am a legacy?

BC has a need-blind admissions policy so applying/not applying for financial aid has no effect. Legacy status does give a slight boost if the applicant is already competitive.

I thought legacy was a big consideration in admissions. Also being from Mass won't help, so many applicants are from Mass.

I know what you mean about being from MA however, 11 kids from last year's class at my school were accepted last year so it's not totally un-doable from MA.

I know my SATs are low, but I may end up giving it a shot anyway. Probably do ED at BU since I really like BU -- ready to hit "submit" on the Common App. and will keep my fingers crossed!
