Any SoCals planning on Davis?

Anyone else from Southern California that’s planning to go to Davis? I love Davis, with the rustic, agrarian atmophere…sigh… but everything is pulling me away from it. One question to you guys, how’d you convince your parents to let you go so far?

Here’s the problem… I live 6 and a half hours from Davis and 15 mins from UCI… you see it yet?.. ugh… everything I have tried to do and say have come up hopeless… I’m even considering giving in and going to UCI… help if you can, guys… any advice at all?

ya, i think i may end up there next year.. i LOVED it when i visited! my parents are pretty much just happy that i'm staying in california, because i was thinking east coast before

lazieeryceboi: i considered davis a bit but my parents don't want me to got here cuz it's way too far (i'm from LA county - san fernando valley). :/ so i can't help you there. i'm going to ucsb though, w00t w00t. but i remember reading your posts before and you seem to really like davis. has your family visited davis tell them it's your dream and you really want to go there. you're going to be at this school for 4 years or more, you have to like it. tell them you're responsible and living farther away will make you more mature and teach you real-life skills.

take the plane to sacramento and a taxi, bus, or amtrack to davis.
MOST of the students at Davis is in your situation of which they live
far (such as me, I live in Los Angeles; I'm still pending between UCI and UCD), but they just don't go home too often, only during long breaks such as christmas, spring break, and other holidays. Go where you want to go not where your parents want you to go. It's the next four years of YOUR life.
Convince your parents by telling them how you will be happier there and how the major there is stronger than it is at UCI, pull out every trick in the book.

hi lazi-
As a parent of a probable Davis student this fall, I think staying in the dorms is a good idea.

Did you attend the Davis Welcome Day? They encourage freshman to live in dorms ( some schools require it). 90% of freshman students live in the dorms at Davis. They cited a variety of reasons ,but the one that parents love: Studies show that students residing on campus have higher GPAs.

It is hard to say whether UCI and Davis will become more prestigious in the near future, but Davis certainly looks positioned to do that.

I think you could try discussing with your parents the need to be more independent and more involved in the whole college experience. The best way to do that is to live on campus....but living at UCI ( 15 mins from home) would be kinda silly ( and costly).

Good luck! Either way, congrats on being colllege-bound!

it's between Davis and UCI... I'm like 10 minutes from UCI and I love the campus, but I hate their breadth requirement and their cheap AP credit. I didn't pass those exams to get elective credit...

I live in LA. I simply loved Davis when I went to visit it. I'm so sick of the City life... Took us about 6 hours to get up there and like somone mentioned earlier who lived near to a college, I could just walk down the street to go to Cal State LA if I wanted to stay close by. I really like the quaint atmosphere of Davis and the Midwest feel. It reminded me of when I was in Witchita or Kansas City.

My parents were critical of going up to Davis until my Dad drove my sister and I up to Davis. He really liked the atmosphere and he was actually proud I decided on UCD. The issue now is finding the money for the place. I could have gone to Cal Poly Pomona for about 8,000 a year, but now I've got to find 21,000 for Davis. Whatever... DAVIS ROCKS!

Cal State LA has the best housing i have ever seen. I spent my last summer there for NASA SHARP and the college itself isn't that nice but the on campus apartments are great. Davis... Good Choice. See ya there.

Really, wow, that's interesting. I drive past them all the time, and I never thought much of them... Well I'm glad to hear that. CSULA has been really giving their campus a nice makeover the past few years which I'm happy for...
