<p>I have seen these in other schools, and I wondered if there are any kind of special course or programs that (all) freshman take at NU as a warm up to the university.</p>
<p>There are freshman seminars. These are seminars over a wide range of diverse and specific topics (from thriller novels to the Medieval origins of Harry Potter to chocolate to Abraham Lincoln to UFOs; you name it), and the basic purpose of them is to develop discussion and writing skills. Weinberg students are required to take two, one in fall quarter and the other in either spring or winter. I don’t think all the schools have to take them, though. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.</p>
<p>School of Communication just started them this year and they are very popular.</p>
