I don't have the loot for a tutor or prep class. I got a book, a practice test from the CB website, and the internet.

I'm looking for inspiration, people! Anybody here who studied on their own up for sharing their 1st and final SAT scores?

I took the PSAT and got a 61 on math, 65 on critical reading, and a 64 on writing. I'm aiming for a score of 2000. I'm thinking I'll take the SAT twice this year and once during the fall of next year. Is my goal reasonable?

It's more than reasonable. Just study with a plan over the summer.

No one needs a tutor or classes to do well. I got a 191 on my sophomore PSAT, then on my first SAT got a 2160. My highest single sitting was 2260 and highest superscore was 2310.

I would say your goal is definitely reachable. My sophomore PSAT I scored a 189 and my Dec SAT I scored a 2010 without intensive study.

I found that the prep course I took was a waste of time, they reinforced basic concepts but didn't apply them to more difficult questions, which is what you need when you are already in the 1900+ range.

I think that self-motivation is the biggest factor in raising your SAT score.

I'm studying on my own. My most recent PSAT (Junior) was a 199, and that was with little studying. I have finished reviewing all the material, in the sections of the BB before the practice test and am now starting. I plan on taking the SAT in March and want to get a 2050 or above.

yeah I really* studied on my own. My parents didn't even know I had to take them -_-.

In a year's time, my psat went from 200 to 231. I didn't work on it all that much. I took several practice tests (or i should say "real psats") and did some vocab over the summer. Words I learned from memorization...hm I'd say around 200.

Most people don't attend those fancy-shmancy classes. They help but not enough to offset the cost. Effective self-studying will get you the same results, so don't worry. Pick up several books and just work through them like crazy. The SAT doesn't test knowledge so much as it tests your test-taking abilities, so if you're familiar with the types of questions and the tricks they try to throw, then you'll do well. Best of luck!

I agree with everyone, tutors and classes just ask for the money, especially tutors! That is their business and it is a good business. Just get books, learn a few hundred vocabulary words, and study your weakspots and you will be fine

^ Yeah, I agree. The only reason why I ever took those classes was because I needed something to force me to study during the school week. Unfortunately, I have this tendency to do my schoolwork and put off stuff like studying for the SAT.

I haven't taken any classes, though my mom is a tutor and I have a lot of books lying around the house, she has yet to actually sit down and teach/tutor me in SAT.
Took it in October... 2190; taking again next saturday...!

I have been studyin for SAT on my own. I took it once in november without any preparation and got 2020. Its been three years since i graduated from high school. I am retaking it next saturday. Though I'm not well acquainted with the american system of education I personally feel that self preparation is more than enough.
