Hey Everyone! I've been hearing about College Confidential for a while and finally decided to join!

I'm currently attending Miami Dade College and am working towards an A.A. and prereqs for a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering along with adhering to the pre-med track. I transferred to MDC nearly a year ago. I was majoring in business admin at a private uni and was forced to take a leave of absence for health reasons. Since I started school again, my GPA has gone up to a 3.8 from a 2.6.

All my advisors tell me is that I should apply to FIU. I understand that guaranteed admission and cheap tuition is a good thing, but I don't feel comfortable settling. Most also tell me that medical school would be impossible for me if I earn a degree in BME.

Test Scores:

I took the SAT while I was just starting a new treatment in May 2009 and did poorly. I remember the 460 in the math section and 760's in the reading and writing. I took the exam while I was in college. I was actually supposed to be a HS junior, but graduated early via homeschooling for health reasons.

E.C.'s:
I worked 60+ hours a week from January 2009- February 2010 and just started getting into volunteering (hospitals, clinics, equestrian centers) and starting up small non-profit projects. I'm also a contributor to my school's paper. There's not much I can to in school since I'm currently on academic probation for dropping an entire semester at my old college. It was an emergency leave of absence, how was I supposed to plan that?

High School:
I finished with a 3.79. Everything was college level (I used MIT OCW and AP materials). I didn't take any AP exams. My family couldn't afford exams. We were nearly homeless for a few months after my mom gave birth to my little brother.

My mom insisted that I opt for a HS Diploma over GED. The transcript doesn't reflect college level at all, it only has course names, but I do have a portfolio with syllabi and work samples.

So, my questions:
Where should I start?
How high should I aim?
Should I retake the SAT?
Would it reflect poorly if I'm taking the exam in college?
How detrimental would my past performance be? Would a steady upwards trend really change anything?

For those of you who reply, thanks for reading! I realize it's quite long. :)
