Any suggestions for our Feb trip to Auburn?

<p>DS is a junior. He loves schools with warm weather and good football teams. He does not know what he wants to major in. He likes to play trumpet and ultimate Frisbee. He wants to be sure to get a chance to study abroad. (He’s a high school athlete looking forward to intramural sports in college.)</p>

<p>Here is our tentative itinerary for a mom and DS trip to look at Auburn and Alabama over DS’s four-day President’s Day weekend. (I like to plan ahead.) DH may join us on Fri or Mon if he can make it the extension of a business trip.</p>

<p>Thurs Feb 17 - fly to Montgomery after school. Pick up rental car.
Fri Feb 18 - tour of Auburn
Sat Feb 19 - a little more time in Auburn, with brunch or lunch. Then drive to Tuscaloosa.
Sun Feb 20 - r and r in Tuscaloosa.
Mon Feb 21 - Attend the “University Days” college visit atAlabama
Monday at 4 or so - drive to Birmingham
Monday at 7 or so - fly home to Ohio</p>

<p>Alamo is not hitting us with a surcharge for picking the car up in Montgomery and dropping it off in Birmingham, which is nice. </p>

<p>I was thinking for Auburn we’d stay at the Holiday Inn Express near campus. We are open to any suggestion of things to be sure to see while we are in Auburn or of things to do Friday night or Saturday morning in Auburn. Thanks in advance for any ideas.</p>

<p>DS is a senior in high school and we visited both schools.<br>
Suggest the Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel & Conference Center at Grand National $125/night or the Hampton Garden Inn at $101/night. The Marriott is located on the famous Robert Trent Golf Trail but is a little further outside of Auburn.
In this process, we have found that the General tours are great for an overall iimpression of the college, however, to really understand the university your visit should include a meeting with the Business School, School of Engineering, Honors College or whatever your DS may be specifically interested in.
Make sure you inquire with both schools about Academic Scholarship opportunities.</p>

<p>You might consider the Auburn Hotel and Conference Center ($119/night) which would put you within walking distance of much that you will want to see.</p>

<p>Totally second the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center. Is right across the street from Auburn’s Library. And a block or so from Toomer’s Corner and the shops/restaurants on College Street.</p>

<p>In addition, if you decide to leave Auburn later in the day on Saturday, the 19th, they have a basketball game at 3 p.m. which would give your son–and you-- a look inside the new basketball arena and some interaction with how the student body is. Can’t say that the bastketball team is expected to be nearly as successful as football is this year, but you still may want to check on tickets in advance of your trip. You can go to auburntigers.com for all sports info.</p>

<p>My daughter is freshman at Auburn, and grew up in Knoxville, TN, having season tickets to UT since a toddler, so Division I college football was a MUST for her. We too toured both Auburn and Alabama, but she couldn’t get past the Roll Tide and to her at least, the overwhelming preppiness of our tour guide. War Eagle fits her much better! She is in pre-engineering and loves Auburn. She is planning to go on the Human Odyssey in Italy Study Abroad program during Summer 2011. I know that Auburn does have ultimate frisbee teams, as my daughter did mention she met some guy on it. Other than that, I can’t help you much on that front tho.</p>

<p>Good luck whereever your son chooses. Both Auburn and Alabama are good schools, but I think you will definitely find that each has a different vibe when you visit. One thing that impressed us about both is the cleanliness of the campuses and the upkeep of the buildings. </p>

<p>Hope you enjoy your trip!</p>

<p>My D is a freshman at Auburn. We have been there four times and have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express each time. It is 2.5 miles from campus, but a very easy drive. We get points and free nights for being a Priority Club member through Holiday Inn. It is cheaper than the Conference Center, and has a hot tub, while the Conference Center does not. The people at the Holiday Inn have been very friendly and the roooms are nice. The CC is fancier, and is right next to the campus.
Our daughter absolutely loves it at Auburn and we are from Minnesota, so it was a complete cultural change. We were overwhelmed with the friendliness of the people at Auburn. It almost seems to be too good to be true about their southern hospitality. We went to the Auburn-LSU game last week and it was incredible. If your son likes football, he will fall in love with the atmosphere. It was the best sporting event I’ve ever attended, and I’ve been to a lot of games! You should definitely walk the downtown area and go to Toomer’s Corner. We like eating at Loco’s which is between campus and the Holiday Inn.
This is a great article I found written about Auburn a few years ago by Scott Van Pelt of ESPN, which pretty well sums up my feelings about the place:</p>

<p>ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt has now joined Bud Polaquin, the Syracuse columnist,
as a converted Auburn fan . . . or at least a fan of the Auburn gameday
experience. Scott is one of the SportsCenter anchors . . . he is tall and
wears the round-rimmed glasses … . . and he is dating an AU communications
grad who now works at ESPN. They came down for the UGA game. I know
someone who ran into him on Friday night as he was trying to go
“low-profile” around campus. I have noticed since this summer that Scott has
taken to saying “War Eagle” on the SportsCenter broadcasts when an Auburn
grad like Frank Thomas or Bellhorn hits a home run, or Rudi Johnson or
Stephen Davis breaks a good run. Scott’s post below about his weekend in
Auburn was made on the Maryland internet message board for his fellow
Maryland fans. BKTerp, a member of that Maryland message board, copied the
post from the Maryland board and posted it on one of the Auburn message
boards since he knew Auburn fans would appreciate Scott’s comments:</p>

Maryland board. Enjoy…</p>

<p>A different world - Non Terps & a lengthy rambling mess</p>

<p>Imagine you have been married to the same woman for more than 30 years, you
love her more than anything - nothing could ever change that. You have
shared many of your best memories with her and would never leave her under
any circumstances. Then you spend a day with a woman who in some ways is
more beautiful than your wife…you may never see her again…but you won’t
forget her for a while either.</p>

<p>Maryland is my wife…Auburn is " the other woman ".</p>

<p>If you all love college sports - and I assume you do - you really need to
see a game there. I have been lucky to see a lot of places, I have not seen
a lot of places like that. It’s an amazing scene in every respect.</p>

<p>Granted, I was there for # 3 vs. # 5…Auburn was 9-0 so it was bound to be
good.</p>

<p>Some highlights:</p>

<p>I arrived at night with the stadium lit up like a Christmas tree. It sits
dead in the middle of campus. A shrine…literally their church - only
services are held on Saturday. Made me say…hmmmm…this is promising.</p>

<p>Gameday scene - tailgating in every available space…and not like some!
field full of RV’s - though they had that too. But literally people grilling
and drinking in every available spot for as far as the eye could see. I lost
count of the number of bands and stages and this was at 9 AM.</p>

<p>The Fans - I knew I was in a " red state " from all the Suburbans with W
stickers but the truth of it is, this part of Alabama is an orange state.
Every man woman and child is in the same shade of orange. Not unusual I know
…but THIS was…they are nice, friendly, and polite - to GEORGIA FANS.
Nobody called anyone in Black and Red ■■■■■■ or *sshole…nobody told them
they sucked… These people are your friends, you don’t know it yet because
you haven’t met them

  • but when you do - you have met a friend. you want a beer ? some bar- B - Q
    ? grab some. Let’s talk for a while…war eagle…let’s have a good game. I
saw this at tailgate after tailgate. Stragglers who wander by are offered
anything that’s available - didn’t matter what color they were wearing. This
is the oldest rivalry in the South - they call it Brother vs. Brother and
they mean it. Now there are certainly cliche’s about down home country
sensibilities - but these folks embodied the best part of the notion of
southern hospitality. Though many did admit it’s a tad LESS civil for the
    Iron Bowl.</p>

<p>Tiger Walk :</p>

<p>Impossible to describe. Im - possible. A human welcome mat for the team. The
team walks through several blocks to Jordan-Hare through a sea of people. I
asked somebody how many folks were there and was told they could never come
up with an accurate head count but that they were certain it was “well in
excess of 25,000 people.” That looked a little light to me…I would have
bought 40 grand. 2 hours before kick the streets in all directions were
completely - and I mean COMPLETELY jammed. It was like a religious
experience. If you can be in the middle of this - and I was lucky enough to
get to walk through it - and not be overwhelmed, you are dead my friend. (I
just went Larry King on your asses - sorry) I was honestly in awe.</p>

<p>Gametime :</p>

<p>The eagle circles as 87,521 people ( less the UGA fans ) cheer
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar EAGLE HEY!!! The eagle pounces on some meat
product and the hair on the back of your neck stands up…then if you are
still unimpressed you get an F-16 flyover and were off and running. Auburn
dominates, the band plays, the fans hoot and holler louder than anywhere I
have ever been (and go Spinal tap and take it to volume 11 when UGa tries to
audible) … 24 - 6 and it’s time for more food and drink…but before
that…</p>

<p>Toomer’s corner :</p>

<p>everyone converges on the intersection of college st and whatever the other
road is and they toilet paper every tree in sight. By the time it’s over, it
looks like a blizzard has rolled through Alabama. There are no riots, no
police, no cars set on fire. There are families from grandparents to infants
chucking rolls of toilet paper all over the place. Again, i just shake my
head at a loss…and maybe a little jealous.</p>

<p>It’s a special place, the best scene I have ever seen for college football.
I have ZERO doubt “our” TEAM could someday be as good. As fans though,
perhaps we should aspire to be as classy as those I was hosted by. The type
of hostile, vile garbage we are subjected to on the road and are certainly
guilty of at home is just embarrassing when you see how they do it
elsewhere. Not preaching here - just some thoughts of one VERY proud
Terrapin after seeing the light Auburn style.</p>

<p>What a great post Mustang!! Makes me wish I was 17 again or at least makes me want to steer my son a little more in Auburn’s direction.</p>

<p>That’s funny, I was thinking the same thing the other day-how nice it would be to be a college freshman. I’m jealous of my daughter and all of the great experiences she’s having in college. (of course, I had fun in college as well, I’d just like to experience those times AGAIN!) If you don’t mind reading another article, this one is great. It is written by a Syracuse columnist back in 2002. It still holds very true yet today.</p>

<p>[Rocky</a> Mountain Auburn Club - Forever Changed](<a href=“http://www.coloradotigers.com/concourse/quotes_syracuse.htm]Rocky”>http://www.coloradotigers.com/concourse/quotes_syracuse.htm)</p>

<p>What a cool site! I just found out that adkv57’s daughter and mine are friends and just went to the Ole Miss game together!</p>

<p>Auburn - stay at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center although priced can vary widely depending on what is happening on campus. Incredibly convenient for checking out campus. You will not need to move your car once you are there unless you want to. If there is a bball game check to see if they have tickets. For some games in the past the AUHCC has had complimentary tickets, just ask when making reservations. (The new bball arena is gorgeous, small but really nice venue.)</p>

<p>At 'Bama I would recommend the Capstone Hotel…on/near campus so very convenient but the AUHCC is a nicer hotel my opinion.</p>

<p>I have visited over 15 campuses the last few years with my sons (one now a sophomore at Auburn and the other trying to decide where to go). The campus hotels may cost a little more but they have helped with parking issues you will have on any campus and have provided an easier opportunity to casually walk/tour campus on our own after dinner or whenever you have a little free time on your visit.</p>

<p>I believe both sons have thought it provided an easier and better way to check out a given campus.</p>

<p>This is one of many pieces I have read regarding how great Auburn fans are.</p>

<p>As the parent of a Sr. I have many friends who also have students who have been going through the journey of looking at schools, finding academic, social, and campus fits. Students that have been ‘BFF’s’ since kindergarten are finding much different things that are driving their decisions. The one thing that is consistent in the conversation is the parents want a ‘do-over’!! :)</p>

<p>Thanks for all of the great input.
I have made reservations on campus at Auburn.
I will make an appointment for us to talk to someone from the honors program.
I checked into getting tickets for the Auburn Vanderbilt basketball game Saturday afternoon at 3; not surprisingly, none to be had.<br>
As the time draws nearer, I’ll be watching the on campus calendars for ideas for Friday night (especially) or Saturday 11 am or noon.</p>

<p>For what it’s worth, you may want to check on the Vanderbilt basketball tickets closer to the time you are going. I don’t think that single game tickets for SEC basketball games are on sale yet. Whatever you do, have a great trip!!</p>

<p>You might be able to get football tickets through the Auburn Ticket Exchange web page on Facebook. Possibly risky, but a try.</p>

<p>We are looking forward to our trip. We fly into Montgomery on Thursday night Feb 17 and are staying at the hotel on campus. After our Friday tours, if we have any energy left, we will go to the Auburn vs. Arkansas State baseball game (6 p.m. Friday Feb 18). I hear that Auburn’s baseball stadium is very nice. We’ll probably be in town until about 2 pm on Saturday. Does anyone have any Saturday morning or mid day suggestions for us?</p>

<p>The baseball stadium is very nice – you should enjoy this event. On Saturday, you may want to drive around town and get a feel for Auburn – the downtown area is pretty nice. Visit Toomers, have a lemonade – it’s a fun little place. Also, there’s a great state park just outside of town, if you want to just unwind and go for a hike – it’s called Chewacla State Park. There’s a nice little waterfall near the dam.</p>

<p>Thanks. Sounds like the weather will be nice.</p>
