Hello! I’m a 21 year old looking to apply to a four year college this fall and hopefully start the 2023 school year. I want to major in dance I’m particularly interested in modern/contemporary dance, I figured that I’d ask if anyone had any suggestions. I just finished a professional acrobatic training program and specialize in static/dance trapeze so I’m looking for locations with strong circus communities (I don’t expect anyone to know a ton about circus communities but It’s relevant to my search). Currently my list is very short: UNLV, CU Boulder, and The University of Utah.
You might want to post also here: Dance Major - College Confidential Forums
You may want to look at the program at Fordham Lincoln Center with Alvin Ailey Dance (audition required I believe).
Do you use silks, as well as trapeze? You can try the dance forum but circus communities are a bit different from the usual modern dance/contemporary dance program. I also recommend Dance Magazine’s college guide.
Knowing nothing about where circus centers are, I did a little bit of research on circuses and combined it with the College Guide from Dance Magazine. This is not a short list, but knowing nothing about your budget, academic background, etc, these are some places where I might start researching.
• Adelphi (NY)
• Dominican U. of California
• Cal State – Fresno
• Cal State – Long Beach
• Florida State which also has its own circus
• George Mason (VA)
• George Washington (D.C.)
• Illinois State, which also has its own Gamma Phi Circus program
• Hofstra (NY)
• Jacksonville (FL)
• U. of Minnesota
• Nova Southeastern (FL)
• Palm Beach Atlantic (FL)
• U. of San Francisco (CA)
• Santa Ana (CA)
• Santa Clara (CA)
• Scripps (CA)
• U. of Southern California
• Tufts (MA)
• U. of South Florida
• Washington U (MO)
• Webster (MO)
A fellow dancer (in their HS dance company) and classmate of my daughter’s is now a rising senior in the program. It wasn’t an easy admit, and they are an amazing dancer and choreographer.
However, @Chdarwin their (my daughter’s friend’s) second choice was the OSU dance program, so that may be worth a look.
Are you looking for a BFA program, or a BA (which would have more elective time and more academic requirements)?
Are you looking at public U’s only, or also private?
As an example of a BA school, Scripps College has a strong dance department, and the Claremont Consortium has a circus community (“5Circus”)
