I recently received an insurance offer from Notre Dame. If my daughter had to withdraw from the university due to an accident or medical reasons, our tuition and room and board would be fully refunded. (If the withdrawl were due to emotional reasons, the refund would be 60%) The cost for this would be $140.00 per year. Anyone's thoughts on this? I hate to have one more bill tied to her college costs, but yet I can see the benefits of this program? Any parents signing up for this?

Debating the same issue here. Husband leaning towards getting it. I personally don't think its necessary. Daughter just finished her 2nd yr at GU, never had nor needed this type of benefit. Honestly don't see my son needing it either. Feel the same way about adding another bill.....any other perspectives?

Hello! I have been lurking for quite some time and have finally decided to post. My son will be attending ND this fall and I am getting nervous!! He is our oldest of two sons.

DH and I have discussed this insurance as well. I think we are going to pass. I hope that is the right decision.

What about the linen service? I was thinking he and I could have fun shopping for this stuff ourselves. We live in Iowa so will be driving to South Bend to move him in. Just typing that gives me a stomachache.

Get the linens yourselves.Your son could not possibly be in a better place-he'll love it and so will you!

I suspect that tuition insurance is analogous to trip insurance. I rarely buy trip insurance and it never crossed my mind to buy tuition insurance.

S used laundry service the first semester but felt it wasn't worth it. Does laundry himself.

We have never purchased the tuition insurance--I guess it is a matter of knowing your kid. However, unforeseen events can happen--it is a risk one takes. I suppose it is more of personal preference. I can tell you (not to hijack the thread) that we have purchased personal property insurance for our student's possessions. And, while we have never had a problem, we felt that this type of insurance was more important than tuition reimbursement. I guess we feel that the risk of theft, damage, etc to personal property is much greater than having to drop out of school and lose tuition money (even tho tuition cost is much greater than personal property at this point). You should receive something in the mail regarding personal property as well. It might be something to consider!

Perhaps others can chime in here but I have heard that the bedding offers are fairly low quality. A good friend of mine ordered the linens and was so unhappy with the quality that she sent it all back. Price wise I do not recall that it was such a good deal. You would do better off at Bed, Bath and Beyond. (Ours even accepts the expired coupons..) Something you might want to consider is purchasing 2 mattress covers. The mattresses are plastic, and not the most comfortable. We bought one very high quality cover, and one less expensive one to make it a bit cushier. It worked out great!

I wish you the best of luck getting him ready! It is a bittersweet time! He is going on to a wonderful time in his life but it is difficult to let go!

The tufted, feather-type mattress toppers are nice too, We put the mattress cover on, then the topper, then the sheet. The twin long stretchy jersey type will easily fit over all this. As S was a freshman, I thought it was the motherly thing to do to, crawling up into the top bunk in 90 degree heat. At any rate, those mattress toppers make it all very comfy! (I think he can take over the task this year though....)

My S had no interest in buying any of the college "stuff". I'm hoping when it's my D's turn, it'll be a fun thing to do together!

Where in Iowa, suesam? I am also from the Hawkeye state!

Didn't buy tuition insurance. Bought the dorm insurance. Bought the computer-priced it out elsewhere and it was very close to the ND price- worth it for the service convenience. Get the linens at BBB. Much better quality.

Thanks so much for all of the replies! I will get the linens from Bed, Bath and Beyond and skip the insurance. I am so glad to see that my son is not the only one who does not want to go college shopping. He just hates to shop and is not interested. I do not understand, at all!!

We are from the southeast corner of Iowa.

Thanks so much for all of the great advice. DS is our first to go to college and we are not at all familiar with ND as do not know anyone who goes there at this time. All of our ds friends are going to state colleges so we are on our own!
