My D has narrowed down her top three choices for school. She will be entering as a vocal performance major and graduate with a BM. Here are her top three: Temple (Boyer), University of South Carolina or University of Miami (Frost).
I am familiar with Boyer School of music because we are from the Philadelphia area however I do not know much about the other two. She received a nice scholarship from Carolina in addition to instate tuition which is about half of the out of state rate. Any thoughts on any of the schools? She is majoring in vocal performance with an emphasis on Opera/classical.
Thank you!
This is a good question to take to the Music Majors forum. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/
Parents there might have good ideas for you.
Thank you I just posted in there!
There are many vocalists on the thread started by spartan drew about “ the journey” and several are considering Frost. The title of your post does not indicate the topic. Maybe you could check in with folks on that other thread or repost with a more detailed title.
I missed this earlier but unfortunately I’m not that familiar with the schools listed. I hope you found some others in your circle with comments. I can only say talk to her current teacher, check out the studio teacher if assigned to be sure it’s a comfortable fit, check curriculum and then let her decide where she would be “happy”. For UG voice, a comfortable environment and a supportive teacher is all you need…and limit debt if possible. Classical VP is a loooong haul.
My son is admitted and considering Frost for classical VP. At one point he considered S. Carolina but in the end did not audition as he just did not like it that much upon touring. Frost is a smaller program, which can be good or bad depending on what your D wants. You should consider having a sample lesson with the Frost professor who coordinates the voice program, to see if your D would be a good for for her studio and/or get her feedback as to her appropriate studio placement. Feel free to PM me if you have a specific question.
Thank you! That is exactly my thoughts
