I took the ACT for the first time in November with minimal studying. I was happy with my overall score of 32, but I know I can do better. My scores were a 34 in English, 33 in Math, 36 in Reading, and only a 25 in science. Obviously, there's a big difference between my science scores and my other scores, and I think my science score brought down my overall score by a lot.

So basically, the science section is my worst nightmare. It's like 25 minutes of torture, and it's the only part of the test that doesn't come naturally for me. I know it really has nothing to do with science, but for some reason I just can't master it; even using the tips in my prep book didn't help.

Someone please help me! I'll take any tips you have!

Hmm, when I took the ACT, I had never taken physics before
and there was a physics science section on my test. I still managed to get through it with a decent score. However, the fact that I had not taken physics before made the test significantly harder.

You could probably make the science section significantly more approachable if you’ve seen the material before. That said, I would consider the test self-contained where you can logically deduce pretty much everything.

I guess if you haven’t taken science classes in a wide variety of areas, it’s more of a logic test. Combine your reading techniques with your mathematical intuition and you should be fine. Your scores in math and reading suggest that you should be able to do well in science.

There is a thread on the ACT sub-forum that addresses this exact topic. There is a link further down the thread for some youtube videos that a lot of people recommend. Good luck!

My son scored perfectly in science…he did take the test 3 times. The 1st time he scored a 27 without preparation…2nd time a 31 and the last time a 34. I think the practice books and tests helped him, and he was much less nervous.
My advice would be to take it as many times as you need to get the highest score. I read something that said that most scores go up untill the 3rd time taking the test!
So… Good Luck! You are off to a great start.

I’m in the same position: there is a 14 point difference between my English and Science scores. I just took the ACT again today, and the Sparknotes online science chapter was pretty helpful when I was preparing. I would also advise you to practice under timed conditions to get used to deciphering the graphs quickly, but I don’t want to be a hypocrite :P

I got a 25 in science last time I took the ACT. Since then, I’ve taken 4some practice tests and managed to get it up to a 31. The trick? I completely forgoed reading the experiments and simply referred to tables and figures the questions asked. Reading wastes so much time you have no idea. Except for the arguing scientists or student hypotheses passages, just start the questions without reading. I really hope I get a high score in yesterday’s ACT I took.
I wish you the best!
