Unweighted GPA: 3.5 :(
I'm not too sure about the conversion, but it's an 88.5/100 average, with a good upward trend from an 84 average freshman year to a 92 average senior year.
My school's a very large and competitive magnet school, ranked highly in the nation.

AP/IB/honors courses
Junior Year: AP Comp Sci
Senior Year: AP Calc AB, AP Statistics

Senior Schedule
AP Calc AB, AP Stat, CORE Government, CORE Economics, British CORE Literature, Creative Nonfiction Workshop, Environmental Studies, (Required) Photography, Modern China Economics, Nutritional Science

Class Rank / Size
School doesn't rank. Class size of around 800.

SAT/ACT/AP scores
-SAT I: (taken this month, expecting a 720+ CR, 800 math, and ??? writing; probably 2150+)

**Extracurrics/b
-Tutored students grade 2-10 at a community tutoring organization from Freshman->Junior year: 5 hours a day during summer weekdays, and 2 hours a week during the schoolyear: about 150 hours logged altogether
-Saturday Chinese School for 10 years up until Junior year
-Volunteer website designer for new nonprofit organization made my an old teacher of mine (Sophomore year to now)
-Writer of school newspaper for junior and senior year
-Chief of Publications of Graymatter (senior year): it's a new student run volunteer organization focused on funding underfunded schools in the city
Not sure if these count:
-Have animated sprite videos on Youtube all throughout High School to express myself
-Administrator/Moderator for a small online animation forum since middle school: spent 2 hours a day making sure that the members follow the forum rules I wrote (Baw, it sounds kind of childish to me. Any opinions here?)
-Family Responsibilities: Mother works from 8AM-9PM with an hour commute and father is elderly and retired, so I do most of the cooking and chores. They're also bad at English, so I fill out official documents for them. My family members in China have been trying to immigrate here for the past few years, and this leaves me a lot of paperwork. It's been eating up my time.
-Vacation to China during summer before Junior year: I did not use English at all.

Recs/Essays
Physics Teacher Rec - He loved me, and knows me as a person. He's an author too.
US History Teacher Rec - He also loved me, and knows of my extracurrics.
Guidance Counselor Rec - She knows me VERY well.
Common App Essay - Personal, though it hints that I enjoy Urban areas and communicating with people.
NYU Supplement Questions: 2/3 look creative to me. I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what to do with the last question, since I'm afraid of getting rejected if I put that I want to bring an anime character to this world. ;_;

Additional Info
-First Generation College Student
(dad didn't graduate high school, mom didn't graduate middle school; both schooled in a foreign country)
-Asian American Male (Chinese)

Thank you guys, again! I'm so nervous since NYU Stern is like, my dream school.
I'll chance back if you want me to!

Not to be rude, but I don’t think “Family Responsibilities” goes under extra-curricular activities; however if you feel it necessary to include it then put it in the additional information section of the application.

I think you can list the Youtube one under EC’s - it sounds really cool.

Also, that anime character sounds like a super cool idea for the third supplement. I am pretty sure no other Stern applicant would have answer like that; plus you must write an answer that is your truth, not what you think admissions wants to hear.

Send all your testing, they will choose what testing would be best to evaluate from. I personally think your stats are good.

Obviously, Stern is an absolute wildcard when it comes to admissions, but you never know unless you try. I see no reason why you shouldn’t get in - good luck!

Thanks for the tip on the Family Responsibilities! I was really confused cause a Stern admissions officer told me to put something about my Family Responsibilities on my app, and that sounded very strange.

You don’t think it will look strange that I pull an anime character out of there randomly? I haven’t even joined the anime club at my school.

But in any case, thank you! :D

Bump for more chances!

Bump! Sorry guys. I’m really nervous since the ED deadline is coming up and I’ve still got to sort out my ECs.

Bump! Anyone? D:

Bump! I think I might take Villanova off my list, so I really like diversity.

TheSternLock, relax my friend. Apply ED to Stern. Your stats are good enough for Boston Uni and for Bentley so you have two great schools that you could possibly go to in case Stern doesn’t work out.
If it makes you feel any better, I am applying to Stern ED as well and my stats are horrible! SAT2050, about a 500 on the SATIILit, somewhere around a 3.4 GPA with a downward trend, my essay is really weak and I have virtually no leadership positions in my EC’s. If it were to come down between you and me, you’re definitely in…so relax.

I guess I am overreacting, haha. Whatever happens happens.

I don’t think you have that bad of chance, since you’re a cool cat. Unlike me, you can keep your calmness during this time. Maybe your essay can convey that part of your personality as well?

You’re applying to a lot of tough schools. I think you have a somewhat reasonable chance at NYU (it’s tough!) You should be in BC. Cornell and Brandeis are reaches, but go for it.

You got some top notch schools listed Sat’s look good for them but GPA might be on the down side. Ec’s are a bit weak as you said and curriculum is a tad bit on the weak side.

Its gonna be tough to get in some of those schools but you got a shot.

Thanks!

Also, just in:
It turns out my website designing employer (the teacher I mentioned) has connections with Stern undergraduates, admissions officers, and MBA grads. He told me yesterday that he’d make a call for me, but do you guys think it’ll help?

Thanks for the chance

Sorry, as one o’ those science kids I don’t know much about NYU Stern, but imo your extracurriculars are excellent and unique enough to help you get into at least most of the schools on your list. If your projected SATs are correct then you should be a shoo-in at BU (the only one on your list I’m knowledgable enough about to chance haha)

You say your ECs aren’t great but i think their decent. and for the one’s your not sure about, put them on the application anyway because it can’t hurt you. Your GPA isn’t great but as long as you show improvement throughout your senior year (especially first quarter) it shouldn’t hurt you as much. Cornell, Bentley, and BC might be a reach for you; i don’t know much about Carnegie Mellon, Babson, Brandeis, Villanova and the profiles of their students, but i’d say your a match for BU, NYU, RPI, and U of Rochester. Good Luck!

your profiles pretty impressive. can your parents afford college? usually Asians don’t get that much when it comes to financial aid and their wondering if you can pay up maybe an obstacle, but you are obviously a great student and the fact that your parents didn’t really get a real education will probably help you more than them not being able to pay up will. good luck!

Pretty good chances! The GPA is the only problem I see, but the SATs are very good. Applying ED should help you a lot. good luck!

Okay, here’s what I think:

What I see here is a lot of good raw material for a strong application to nearly any school. At this point, it’s all about presentation. Pick two or three main topics of activity for your extra curriculars- for instance, mine were music, leadership, and service. From there, nearly everything I do gets categorized under one of those things in an effort to present myself in the most organized way possible. You seem to be really into publications and media. Try to organize things under that umbrella a little more. Make everything a supporting point to the topic “I’m a fantastic applicant to your school!”

Otherwise, you look like a strong applicant to any of your schools. As I’m sure you know, NYU is the number one most difficult non-ivy, so it, like the ivies, is probably a little bit of a crap shoot. U Roch and BU should be shoe-ins, and I don’t know enough about many of the others to make an educated statement. I’d say Carnegie Mellon is probably a reach from what I know about it, but that’s not much.

There are very few weaknesses in your application. One of them is the 84 average freshman year. From this point on, you’re definitely starting out behind the eight ball. But, that said, you’ve shown a VAST improvement over the years, and that’s probably the second best thing to getting the grades right along. Depending on who reads your app, it might be what pushes you over the edge.

Your senior schedule also seems a little funky. It looks to be mostly comprised of electives, although I don’t know. I come from a school where seven of my eight periods are handed to me, so this elective business is unfamiliar. The fact that you’re taking AP Calc is good.

Lastly, I would ABSOLUTELY include your family responsibilities! I heard it best explained like this: the purpose of you listing your activities is not only to see what your interests are and how dedicated you are to a purpose, but also to see how you spent your time. If you list ‘school newspaper’ as your only extracurricular, what are you doing with yourself? By the time you get done accounting for all of your ECs, there should be very little time left in a week, month, or year for unspecified activities. Part of it is just making sure you’re not a hooligan! So definitely, definitely include that. If it takes up your time, it matters.

Hope that helped!
