Any tips on getting the most out of the admitted students overnighter?

i am going to one on April 3rd.

Stay in one of the dorms with a student host. Attend a class or two. Attend the info seminars on whatever pertains or interests you. Make a list of questions before you go to ask. Perhaps try to take an extra day and spend some time exploring Cleveland’s museums, Little Italy, shopping, etc. Enjoy yourself.

Try to talk to as many people as you can.

Be flexible - my kid started our in a dorm and ended up sleeping in a frat, but it opened his eyes about Greek life (in a good way).

Do you guys know if i could have a one on one with a financial aid person to discuss loans and stuff?

@mrbond, I can’t remember if that was an option during the weekend. But I am sure you can call and ask before your visit. FA has always been very helpful and willing to answer my questions on the phone

Just returned from the first session. Went well, but wished the campus tours were geared more to the general major. Still worth the trip, and daughter felt good enough about Case after to commit to them…so our college hunt is now complete. Now the rest of the fun begins. BTW…recommend the Jolly Scholar at the Thwing center a bit to eat. Also La Albatross was excellent 100 ft from the Glidden House. Food in the schools cafe’s passed my daughters liking as well. Good trip but windy last weekend, blows off the Lake.

@jkm05478 what did you mean by “wished the campus tours were geared more to the general major”?

@MrBond I wanna talk to the FA office too! Could u please share how the discussions go after u’re done (if u can really meet and talk to them)?

@jkm05478, Congrats to your daughter!

@YammyNug I will!

MrBond… our tour was geared toward all the Engineering building, even though a poll of the participants, taken by the guide, was that our group was all Bio, Med, Nursing orientated majors. We visited the Electronics lab, and walked the buildings dealing with Eng. Would have been more interesting if we had walk around the Health Care campus buildings. Now they did have a separate meeting/overview and internal tour of the Nursing, that lasted 90 minutes, and that was perfect for us. Detailed information, and I believe they did the same for Engineering. UPITT did a much better job in doing tours. Over all we enjoyed the two days, and my daughter decided while there she would commit to Case. She really liked the overnight stay, the student she was matched with (a freshman) was from the same state as us, and she brought her roommate along so my daughter really got a lot of attention and honest strait talk from them. I think they walked around campus until midnight. She had a great time and that really put my daughter at ease.

It seems as though the schedule for day 2 is very similar to day 1, correct? We can only attend one day. Will this be a mistake?

@Cephraim, I believe there are a lot of repeat tours going on during day two that are offered for day one.You will just have to cram more in in less time. But do take some time to talk with students. As @jkm05478 just described, that is what really helps one get a feel for the school just as much as seeing the campus and hearing information that really you could read online.

Has anyone already committed to CWR?

I posted this comment in another thread, but I thought I would repeat it here since this is about the admitted student weekend. We went with our son to the admitted student overnight at Case last weekend, and we were very impressed. We really liked the campus and the programs and the faculty, and our son felt that he fit in well with the other students. He spent the night in a dorm in Juniper (I think it was) with a freshman who is majoring in mechanical engineering, and they really got along famously. During the visit we also attended a presentation about the mechanical/aerospace department, and we were thrilled with all the opportunities for undergraduate research and co-ops that the students can pursue. My son was also very interested to learn about the 5-year BS/MS program, which we really hadn’t looked into before talking with the professor who staffed the presentation. I thought we were going to have to physically drag DS out of the ThinkBox facility–he didn’t want to leave! And to hear that the facility will be expanding and moving into a 7-story building space this year–wow! The staff at Case Western has also impressed us – every interaction we’ve had with them has been welcoming and gracious and helpful and enthusiastic. We have two more Admitted Student programs to attend this month, but right now I have to say that Case is at the top of his list – and ours!
