Any Top 25 schools willing to overlook low GPA?

this is going to sound like a stupid question,
but are there any top 25 schools that can overlook a low (3.5-3.6 uw) GPA with 2200ish SAT's and genuinely good extracurriculars?
also, does a final grade of 'c' during junior year in a rigorous GT course vastly hurt one's chances at admission into these schools? how about if the major that's bubbled into college aps isn't really related to that course?

you will be fine!!!!!!!

3.5-3.6 is not low. (actually depends on how rigorous your courseload is + class rank/decile) I have like a 3.2uw, and I'm still applying to a few of the top 25 schools, lmfao. (however, i'm in the top 15%) You will definitely get into at least SOME of them if you have high SATs and good ECs :)

I know Emory has a REALLY high ED acceptance rate, for one...

colleges will over look gpa with those high sats and for other reasons. sat shows how smart you are, and that grades don't reflect your intelligence well. now you just have to prove that your not lazy. my excuses will be: surgeries over the last couple of years combined with intense ec's (if you saw the movie rushmore, that kid who didnt really take hs classes but did every ec, thats me, kind of)

You're in the top 15% with a 3.2? I have a 3.2 and I'm in the 45-50%

Chicago and CMU are very holistic in admissions. Both schools have been known to take lower GPA (usually less lenient against lower SATs) in return for great E.C.'s, interest, knowledgable about major, etc. High SATs definitely help for both schools.

I'm in the same boat. High test scores and great EC's but very low GPA. 3.35 UW.

I'm applying to emory and Chicago. Like acceptedalready said, although not common, chicago is known to accept people with very low GPA's if you show your personality through your essays. They use GPA to see how serious you are about your academics (I hope), so if you have a strong rising trend and you address this in your essays (i hope), I think you'd have a chance.

I have this same issue. I'm only a sophomore but my GPA i'm calculating will be around 3.6 or so? Not that great. I do quite a wide variety of EC's which i love. And I'm president of a top charity organization. I want to get into at least USC though =/.. i don't feel too easy about my chances lol

if you have an amazing talent (what some college admissions "philosophers" call an "angular" student), GPA doesn't matter. I've heard of a girl who got accepted to Harvard with a ~3.0 GPA but was rejected at UCI because Harvard really saw her talent in theatre.

This is the way I see it:

GPA is unquestionably the most important factor, however, when you add up everything else (SAT, EC, rec, etc.), then it amounts to more than GPA. While GPA for most any school is the most important factor by itself, a combination of above-average excellence in the other areas supercedes that. Just my thoughts, though. (And this is assuming the GPA isn't crazy low, which I'm assuming it isn't).

I feel like I've stated this before lol... I have a 3.8-9w (all honor + AP), and we rank by weighted GPA.

nice school I have a 4.42 weighted and if we did it by weighted gpa I would only be top 20%. I go to a public school by the way. And to be frank, NO. GPA IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR! 3.5-3.6 uw does not even come close to the 50th percentiles for many of the top 25. And your ecs and sats are mediocre in comparison to most applicants to hypms and only average for berkeley and ucla.

a 3.5 to a 3.6 is not LOWW!!! thats a average of 91-92!!! so ur finee... if u had a 3.4 or below then u should be worried a bitt... just hav really good ec to back ur grades upp...

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach

yea, 3.6 is not low. I have a 3.35 and i'm applying to some top 25 schools.

Like I said before, Chicago is known to accept <3.5's. They at least give you a chance, instead of "throwing your app out the window" after looking at your GPA. If your essays and SAT scores (EC's) show that your serious about your education, i'd think you have a shot at chicago.

laxgirl: good to see a fellow laxer on the boards

3.6 is low. Sorry. I have a 3.6 (although a good upward trend), and it will be difficult getting into the top 25 schools, especially as your SATs are solid, but don't make you stand out. Get them up to 2300+ and you'll have a better shot.

Oh, and the C will hurt quite a bit. Bs hurt enough, a C is really painful, ESPECIALLY during junior year. Not trying to play down your chances, I just think some of the people here are a bit hopelessly optimistic.

I got 3 C's junior year. A C- in chemistry AP actually. Granted, I have special circumstances (letter from counselor + social worker/therapist).

Will colleges overlook that a bit if my second semester grades reflect my "true" academics?

If you're considering the top liberal arts colleges, too, I would consider checking them out. They tend to focus a little more on the entire person rather than setting an exact standards for GPA and SAT scores. Granted, they still value academic success but they're not quite as strict.

I'm sorry but 3.6 UW will seriously hurt your chances for Top10 universities. I'm uncertain about the Top11-25 schools, but all these schools are incredibly competitive. You do not realize just how competitive these schools are. Although you could have incredible SAT's and EC's, the thing is, there are probably 100 other applicants who also have incredible SAT's and EC's, but they have a much better GPA than you.
