Any Truth to this?

The nurse at my daughter's dermatologist's office has a son attending SUNY Stony Brook.

She told us (last week) that SUNY Stony Brook is changing from a public to private university.

I cannot find anything about this by surfing on the web.

Have any of you heard about this or know what she's talking about?

Thanks -

Uh, no way. It's the kind of thing most decent public universities seem to have floating around their rumor mill, but I can't imagine it actually happening.

I've actually heard that the president of Stony Brook University is planning to try and make Stony Brook University a private university...TRYING being the operative word there. Don't know if it'll go okay with the state and everything though....and I don't think it's a rumor because my friend said he read it somewhere....ah I don't know T.T

Heh, a printed rumor is still a rumor! I read something about it too... in The Press. And as much as I love The Press and think they're awesome, this particular column would not be my choice for accurate information.

When dear Shirley makes a public statement about it, I'll start thinking it's a possibility. But it's not like we have a particularly large endowment to fall back on, and we're hungry enough for money as is with all the construction and growth that's been going on.

And honestly, I think going private (even if it were a realistic possibility, which I don't think it is) would hurt the school. One of the really great things about Stony Brook is its diversity, both racial and socio-economic. My education has been richer for the presence of some really brilliant classmates whose families could never afford a private education and/or who are working their way through school. The atmosphere here is also much more down to earth than that at many of my high school friends' private schools--many of the people I went to high school with are shocked that I don't automatically assume everyone can afford to eat out all the time! I would hate to lose that for some perceived status gained by going private.

No chance. It would definitely hurt us, not help us.

i am currently attending SBU and i’ve heard somethings like that too . . . if stony brook does become a private, that would be great. though it would mean higher tuition, i suppose it won’t be looked as a “not as good as privates” anymore :)
