Does Buffalo have any type of shipping program for sending your stuff to college? My son is starting in the fall of 2010 and I am looking for the easiest way to get his stuff there from Long Island. I also read something about a dorm fridge package? What is that?

Dorm fridge package… You buy the fridge and it is delivered to your dorm (you pick it up when you move in.) Son did that and it is fine.

Shipping- we drove and brought stuff up and stored it during orientation. Then we flew up for move-in day out of Islip and rented a car/got a hotel. Son in Miami- we shipped boxes UPS. Paid on line and UPS picked them up at our house. You can do two things… Call housing and find out if you can ship directly to the dorm and get it upon moving in (that may be a problem) OR do as we did for Miami so- ship to local UPS store (call them during the summer), with your childs name UPS Store and their address. Write in marker “HOLD FOR PICKUP” and the date of P/U. At Miami they held the packages for $5 or $10/day. IF you do that, rent a big enough vehicle to hold it. We had 4 of us and 4 big boxes and rented a minivan.

Son is a freshman and the plan is for him (and friends) to store stuff near campus at one of the storage centers and split the cost. (Son in Fl has a apt, but before he did, he sent stuff home with his roommate, and stored stuff in apts of kids he met.

We went to Bed bath and Beyond down here and ordered it all to be picked up in Amherst. You get your stuff when you go there and can deiced then what you need and don’t need and just buy what you want. It will all be ready for you. Also, you shop then and pick up what you forgot or need. Target is right next door for all the toiletries.

Pack light. We overpacked and my son brought a suitcase home with stuff to stay here during winter and spring breaks.

You can also Amazon TV and printer. We Amazoned TV and he had it the second day we were there.

Come back on here or PM for ideas of what you may need.

We did the Bed Bath and Beyond program. It worked great for us. We did not ship up stuff when he was a freshman because we drove him up but we would not have fit all the BB&B stuff and everything else in our SUV. You have any store possible in the Buffalo area so you can buy what ever he need once you get up there. He is a junior now and lives off campus but we also stored his stuff over the the past 2 summers in a Public Storage unit that he shared with other kids.
