If I get accepted into UCLA I'm thinking of switching my major to Sociocultural Anthropology. Can anyone here give me feedback on the department and classes?

For awhile UCLA thought I was enrolled for Fall 2009 and the Anthropology departments Undergraduate advisor Ann E. Walters put me on her mailing list and all I can say is WOW.
UCLA has so many opportunities for Anthropology majors, Ann send out emails pertaining to jobs, internships, scholarships and classes biweekly. I visited the department in Haines Hall a couple times and a very friendly staff thought I was enrolled and gave me all the corswork papers so I can choose my classes.
They have an amazing selection of Anthropology classes and it is really a first class department.

Now that I know how UCLA’s Department of Anthropology is, It will make it harder to choose between Berkeley’s Anthro Department and theirs. I just hope I get accepted to both schools so I can make that choice.

anon5524485-good article but isn’t 1999 a bit dated, is your experience with Cal’s Anthro department recent? was your experience as an undergrad or are you speaking as a graduate student?

Because for graduate school I think UCLA does have a better program for Archeology, Costen’s Institute, from what I have read is great.

I think you raise several great points and I will definitely look into Cal’s Anthro department. I always heard good things about it but first hand experience is best, thanks for your input.

This is some good stuff! Thanks Janethedoe! I’m excited

Sadly, this is not far from the truth. I have it on good authority that no graduate students were admitted in the archaeology track this year.

It must be noted, however, that Berkeley’s true strength in archaeology lies in Classics and Near Eastern Studies. The AHMA program is still going strong.

This post if kind of older, can anyone else contribute their experiences with CAL or UCLA?

I am making the same decision in April.

Ha! I remember reading this last year!

I second BerkeleyOrBust. If anyone else has any experiences in the department, I’d really appreciate hearing about them.

I can’t talk first hand, but I did attend a Person Statement workshop a few months ago. I spent a few hours with a guy currently finishing his senior year as an Anthro major @ UCLA. He said he loved everything about Anthro @ UCLA!! He said the professors were great and the program allowed him to easily minor in Chicano Studies.

So, in what I hope won’t be a failed attempt to resurrect the dead - I would love to hear about anyones experience with the anthropology department at UCLA (Cal, UCSC, UCSB, or UC Davis)!

Even though I only have confirmed acceptances at UCSC and UCSB, any and all info on the anthropology departments on any of the schools listed above (*specifically UCLA) are welcomed.
