Any University of South Florida and University of Miami takers for BS/MD program?

Since I am from Florida, I would like to lock my spot at USF and if I am lucky then I may get selected at UM. But I have some questions.

Since USF is not a guaranteed lock, and I have not seen more than 50% matriculate into Medical School, what seems to be the real issue? The USF Honors program does not pave true dedicated pathway to MD and it lets your pursue different professional degrees etc. Would this have an impact regarding less people matriculating into Med programs?

I know for sure the stats of the people getting inside USF is not stellar quality like other BS/MD programs. Would this also translate to few dedicated people who want to matriculate into medical schools?

I have seen someone (OrangeandGreen) talk about University of Miami Med Scholar programs has very high matriculation rates. Of course they select only 14 students when compared to USF admitting up to 50 or 60 students in the Honors program.

A friend of mine told me that University of Miami is less safe and situated in a crime-ridden area. I have been to USF campus and it is appears to be located in a reasonable area (it is far way from downtown). Any comments?

I’m also planning on attending USF’s 7 year program. The big thing to know is that few people actually make it through, but only because the course load is rigorous. You’ll finish the major prereqs in around 2 years compared to three or four, and that’s what I like about the program. It gives you time to volunteer, shadow, study for MCAT, etc. I also love the campus and the fact that USF is an up and coming university. You can also look at the honors college site here:

Hey Panda:

Do you know that USF accepts AP credits. I have heard that they take almost all the AP Credits. If so, the load factor should be light. But you need to score a minimum of 4 in AP exams.

Yeah, USF does give AP credit. I know scoring a 3 on an AP English exam can waive a semester of College English, but I have to check for the others.
