S and I visited in the Fall and he fell in love with the place. Eveything just seemed to click. And of course loved Mary Mowry and those he met of the staff. He auditioned 2 weekends ago and is so antsy. He has been accepted to the University with a top academic scholarship. We are one of those families that didn’t really know “the routine” until this Fall and so there are a number of things we could have probably done better. As with everyone posting, we feel S is quite good. Has plenty of local and state indicators that he’s good, but that clearly isn’t enough and that’s so nerve-wracking.

Was wondering if any current students (or parents of students) could give some sort of update on OCU so far this season from the inside…offers, acceptances, when the Feb letters would go out, how many they think they’ll be offering, etc.

We just got back from auditions at Belmont in Nashville. Are scheduled for Elon this weekend but would really prefer to end the process if, by some chance we could.

CC has been a wonderful source of info, I just wish I’d found it before last weekend! I guess right now, more than anything I’m just babbling and looking for someone to hold my (online) hand and say it will be OK (oops, no pun intended)

Wmon, welcom to CC, it's a great place, I don't know what we would have done without it. I will ask my S if he has any info on acceptances, I do know that last year he auditioned, I think on the 11th or 12th of Feb and the acceptence letter was dated Feb.23rd (btw, it came in a "thin" envelope, two sheets, one for acceptance and one for talent award).
Good Luck,
Rusty

This year it seems to be a 2 - 3week process. My D auditioned in mid Nov and found out the first week of Dec- and as srw mentioned , it was a THIN envelope!

WMonMTDad, welcome! I agree CC contains a wealth of knowlege, but we didn't discover it until after D auditioned! We had no idea you were supposed to apply to a whole lot of schools! One visit to OCU and that's the only place she wanted to go, so that's the only place she auditioned! Luckily, it worked out!

My D worked the Saturday audition day. She said there were a lot of no-shows, but she thinks about 40 auditioned on Saturday (don't know about the other days). She has nothing to do with it now, so I don't know when the letters will go out.

I'm glad your S liked OCU. The people there truly are the difference. I just got back from visiting this weekend and watching D perform in a church production. Spent time with several of the students who were also in the production and other friends. They all seem very happy there.

When we got there Saturday they indicated that there seemed to be a lot of no-shows. No indication if it was above average or not or why, although I'm sure the weather issues in the north and NE were likely an issue. One of the really neat things Saturday was when some of the students remembered him from the choir class he sat in on in October.

We, like you, didn't understand the need to audition lots of places (although as busy as he is I'm not sure how we could make it happen.) We're only signed up for OCU, Belmont, and Elon. But the fact remains that culturally S didn't feel he was ready to leave the region and learn a new society at the same time he was settling into the theatre culture full-time. Belmont's program is young but my niece is a senior there in Comm Music so we are familiar with the school at least. Meeting someone this Fall we were aware of and considered to be one of Belmont's better MT students who had transferred to OCU was the icing on the cake during our initial visit to OCU.

My daughter audtioned for OCU on February 9, 2007. She just got the letter of acceptance in the mail today. They have several programs at OCU. MT, Vocal performance and a bachelor of fine arts in acting. My D auditioned for MTand Acting. She was accepted for Acting but not for MT. After calling the counselor, I feel pretty good about it. I was told that they only took 4 or 5 for each department from these Feb. auditions. MT was my D first choice. But from what I understand, the departments work together. The drama department also works on voice and dance. And anyone can try out for the musicals and plays. The same happed when she tried out for OU. She was accepted into the Theatre department but not to the MT department. OU only takes 6 boys and 6 girls a year. Those MT departments are so competitive.

congrats to your D, downtown. One thing to check (if it is important to your D) is whether the voice that she will take is voice, as in "singing," or (as I expect) "voice" as in "voice for actors," which is usually NOT singing. Voice for actors is about how to properly use the voice onstage, using Lessac, Linklater and other methodology. But it is not singing. Perhaps, if that is the case, your D could still seek out private voice/singing lessons to keep up on her vocal music skills? In any case, it's great news. Congrats!

Congrats!!! We were there for Sat 2/10 so I knew the time was drawing near. S is at JCL convention until Sunday, so if the letter arrives tomorrow we'll still be biting nails I suppose. I thought the count was a bit higher than 6/6 for MT but I'd never asked for a specific number; if that's the real number it's certainly tight.

Some would say that with fewer males it is easier to get in. I'm not sure I'd agree. For a guy the "macho" hurdle is high and so I think most, but certainly not all, of the ones auditioning would seem to be competitive. Besides, when you're talking about such small numbers the difference between 5% and 10% isn't necessarily significant. There's still 90-95% disappointed.

The theatre majors at OCU DO take singing voice lessons - I believe there is a very small credit requirement for voice, but most theatre majors take it every semester, as there's no maximum for how much voice you can take. The difference between voice for Theatre students or BMs (MT/VP) is that the Theatre students take from an adjunct faculty, it's not the same faculty that the BMs work with.

The min for theatre performance and acting majors is 3 semesters of dance and 3 of voice, but you can take either of them all 8 semesters.

And last year, about 50 people were accepted into the theatre department, including all the tech majors, and all transfers. So I think that probably makes about 35 freshman theatre performance majors accepted last year.

Our S just got his acceptance letter today for the MT department. I think his audition was 2/10. OCU was his top school and his first audition so I think that he will be Oklahoma bound.

My D has also been accepted to the BFA in Theater Performance. We learned that they will have seen around 700 auditions and will take a final class of 50. D was hoping for MT, but this sounds like a great new BFA program! We've asked for a copy of their curriculum to compare to other programs. Her passion is MT.

My daughter's letter says, "Congratulations on your successful audition for admission into the Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting degree program in the Theatre Department at Oklahoma City University." I was wondering if anyone knows of the reputation of this department compared to the MT and dance dept. In reading the link a sentence caught my eye. "We have been charged with building a program that matches the strengths of OCU's nationally recognized programs in Music and Dance & Arts Management." They are taking 50 students this year for a total of 220 in the department. And are going to take whatever they need after that to maintain their 220 students per year. It sounds like we are getting in on the ground floor of a program that is building. Does anyone have experience with this program at OCU. I understand that they hav seen 700 students in the Drama department so far, so I do feel fortunate that my D was selected. We are just waiting to hear from other colleges also. This is only the 2nd one she has heard from.
