Any Very Good Engineering Programs that offer good NMF Scholarships (see list)?

My son has been looking at (approx.) "top 25" engineering programs at well-ranked public and private univ/coll. He is not really interested in a tech school as such, but would prefer a school with a variety of good programs. He is a National Merit Semifinalist (expecting to be a finalist). Our opinion is that although he shouldn't choose a school primarily based on merit aid, it also isn't prudent to disregard that factor completely.

Here is a list from CC identifying current aid for NMFs.

My question is: Are there any schools on the list that should be considered for someone desiring a very good education in ME?

o Full ride is defined as minimum tuition/room/board.
o U=University, C=College

Definitely favor the full rides more than the others, and USC is uber-expensive and probably not worth it.

U Florida may be your best bet…a top-25 engineering program with in-state tuition and a ~1k credit last time I checked. So, you would end up with expenses of room and board and only 2K or so tuition for the year. That is a pretty solid value for such a well ranked program.

First, eliminate all those honorable mentions.
Difference between full ride vs. merely full tuition if you are OOS or even just too far to commute can be $10k/yr. or more.

Thanks for the input! I want to emphasize that it is not just about the money. He may end up at a school with little or no merit aid. But we would like to explore the possibility of a match-up between a very good school with a very good engineering program with good/very good merit aid – thus the original question. A very good program/school with lesser aid would be favored over a fair/good school with a full ride. Obviously “very good”, “good”, etc. are subjective. There may also be other schools to consider that aren’t on this CC list.

It is smart to consider the financial side of the equation as you are. When it came time for me to choose schools, I ended up at Purdue over U of Florida(which was in-state tuition for me) because I was sold on going to one of the best engineering programs. However, in hindsight it seems like it may have been a better choice to go to a very good school such as UF and graduate with 0$ debt than graduating from Purdue with nearly 70K in debt. At this point I am sticking with my decision to come to Purdue, but there are days when I really kick myself for being so concerned with prestige.

I think UF is probably the best when considering the program versus cost (OOS tuition waiver brings its annual tuition down to $5k / year). Also, I believe UF awards (depending on need) money for OOS students on top of the waiver to the tune of 1-2k per year.

The list you posted is a little out of date. Go to the same thread (below) and scroll to the end for the latest:

[thread=649276]NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation[/thread]

If you’re considering those schools primarily because of the financial aspect, then unless there’s a compelling reason, you should probably stick to the full tuition and full ride schools. There are a few on that list that make good financial safeties. I like Alabama-Huntsville (full ride; UAlabama’s 3.5 requirement makes it a no-go for me), Arizona (full ride), Nebraska, Oklahoma (very aggressive recruitment of NMFs), Ohio State (but it’s competitive to get the scholarship), Baylor, Bradley (a highly ranked ME department among Masters universities), Evansville (DS and I were surprisingly very impressed with the engineering department, though a 3.35 GPA almost puts it out), and Tulsa (competitive). Perhaps Florida as well, though it might cost a bit more than the others.

Pretty similar to what Japher listed, I see. A good mix of public and private; large, medium, and small; and some geographic variety. DS decided to save his $$ for grad school and chose Bradley - after one whole week:), seems happy with his choice.

You’ll likely have good merit offers from other schools if your son is a NMF, but having one or two of these in your back pocket can’t hurt. Who knows - like my son, he may find that one of them is a better fit than the higher prestige schools.

Thanks, Knowitsome, I thought that I had copied the end post, but apparently had the earlier one from Feb. pasted here. So below is the updated list with original post. Sorry, everyone. I very much appreciate the comments. Would also like to hear more concerning list below if anyone has opinions or personal experience with any of the listed schools or perhaps others that weren’t included on the list. Thanks again!

PurdueFrank, Thanks for being so forthcoming concerning your experience. It was definitely valuable food for thought.
