Any veterans?

Any vets applying for UC's here?
Just curious how much veteran status will affect my application?

Applied: Cal, UCLA, UC Davis
In: Davis(Psych)
Psychology for all three, political science backup at UCLA/Davis.
3.65
IGETC done
Cal Starting Point Membership
4.0 in Psych courses (4), missing 1 Prereq from UCLA (chem) and Cal (2nd bio), Davis complete.
USAF Vet, lived in Germany for two years, plenty of volunteer stuff, NREMT-B cert.
Believe my essays were very strong.

Also just curious if any other vets are going through the UC transfer process (especially those utilizing the post 9/11 GI Bill)!
Thanks guys.

USAF here, too. Congrats on your acceptance to Davis! I’ve applied to UCB, UCLA, UCSC, and UCSD. I’ve been accepted at UCSC and have not heard from the others.

GPA: 3.9 from last two years, 3.5 including courses from 2002
Major: English
IGETC/prereqs: Done/next to none
Essay: Being that my experiences in the military were challenging and unique, I also feel that my essay was very strong.

I’m using ch. 30 until it runs out and then planning to use post 9/11. I plan to go onto grad school, so the extra year will help out. Cheers!

Well done my friend. I thought about waiting out for that extra year as well; however, there is no way I could afford these tuitions and living areas on the chap 30 stuff. I’ll cross the grad school bridge when I get there. The starting point program @ Cal was very helpful for the essay overview, would recommend.

Good luck with your other schools, guess we’ll find out if we’re golden bears or bruins soon enough!

Congrats to both of you. I’m not a veterans, but my father and grandfather are vets, so I have a lot of respect for veterans . I also receive veteran spouse benefits, because of my father.

Ah, mind sharing some info about that program? This is the first time I’ve heard of it, blasted!

Also, do you plan on participating in any veteran activities? I noticed Cal offers a transitional course that may be useful. I also think it would be nice to meet the other vets on campus.

Since I’m obsessed with UCB, I’m not really sure what LA offers, haha.

Good luck to you as well    (happy face overload…I can’t wait!!)

Thanks Johnny :)

Good luck to all of you! UCB’s transfer center does have special programs for vets and they seem to be making a concerted effort to increase the # of vets on campus. I def. have vets in my classes in the poli sci dep’t at Cal all the time!

The starting point membership at Cal basically just pairs you with another student at Cal who is most likely in your same major. My pair was pretty helpful with any questions I had regarding the transfer process and the psych department. The best part of the program was the essay review though, (I believe vets that aren’t in the program could also attend the essay review).
It’s 1 on 1 time with an actual Cal essay admissions person, they look it over and give some some constructive criticism.

If either school accepts me and there are vet activities going on, I may very well be there! Keep in touch!

Yo. Im a vet too. I am waiting to use Ch. 33 for when I get into a 4 year. I used 12 months of Ch.30 for CC but havent used it for a while. I think I am going to use Ch.33 to help out on a foreclosure I want to buy. Nothing like using govt money for investment purposes. Milking the govt for every penny I can line my pocket with! HA

US Army Vet, lived in Germany for three years, Iraq Vet, Work Study job for VA @ a counseling center, currently working for the county helping homeless/substance abuse veterans. also co-founder of an Iraq/Afghanistan group

Bump for anyone that knows the answer to this question:
Do we pay tuition and then get reimbursed or does the VA automatically deal with the tuition?

Thanks for any answers.

@scoopydowop, Good luck getting a mortgage accepted with GI Bill as your income source. I tried to buy a foreclosed condo in San Diego that would have cost me half of what I pay now in rent, but NO BANKS accept GI Bill income as an actual source of income. Even if are you are certified to get a VA loan.
Their reasoning: GI Bill benefits are contingent upon you staying in school, thus it is risky for us to loan to you because hypothetically you could drop out of school and have no income
My Response: It is the same risk you take when you give a mortgage to a person with a job. They could easily quit the job after getting accepted for the mortgage.
Unfortunately, it didn’t matter. Which is so bogus.

EDIT: I noticed you did VA work study. My situation was that I only had GI Bill as my income source. If you have a primary one (your work study), maybe it will be different for you. Also, what was the VA work study like? I have heard that many times they don’t even have work for you so you basically get paid to do 4 hours of work a week and just sit around doing your homework the other 21 hours.

Work study is the best job ever. Yeah I basically was paid to do my homework and the rest of the time was hanging out with WWII and vietnam vets telling war stories. Man o man, our generation doesnt have s hit on those WWII guys. Anyway, I dont work the work study job anymore cause I am not collecting my GI Bill right now. You can only do the work study if you are also collecting the GI Bill. I also get disability from the VA so hopefully the bank will count that.

Damn dude that sucks cause that was my plan. I do collect disablity and I also will pick up the workstudy job once I am in at whatever university I get into, but hey that job is only dependent on being in school too. F ucking banks suck ass. First they make tons of mistakes, get a bailout and then take it out on its customers. Whatever. Thanks for the info though. Did you ever get the condo?

For any of the vets that are currently going through or have already gone through the process! Good luck guys!

Hey, I hear that Cal has the most vets out of any school in the UC system?

Yeah I heard Berkeley was “rolling out the red carpet” for vets and therefore have the most vets at their school. I think they set the example a few years back and so now more UC’s are looking for vets. I like to think that in the tough economic times vets might be looked at favorably because their tuition is paid for by the govt and so the UC gets max money from the student. I dont know if this logic is correct but it makes me sleep better at night knowing I might have a chance at getting into Berkeley

Hello everyone!
USArmy vet here. 4 years active duty, 4 years reserves

In: UCI Sociology major
GPA:3.81
IGETC/PreReqs: Completed

Matt?

If you get into both Cal and LA, where are you headed?

Is LA as vet friendly as Cal seems to be?

Hello NCB316!
I’m shooting for LA since I live like 5 miles away.
LA is vet friendly but I couldn’t compare to Cal since I’ve never been there.
Where are you located?

I’m coming out of the north bay.

Any good news from my fellow vets?

I found out this week that I’m graduating as one of the Valedictorians at San Diego Mesa College next month.
