Thought I should provide an update for those who are still on the wait-list. This year they have done things a little bit differently. They sent out an email to all remaining candidates on the wait-list, asking to respond if they are interested in attending still. Based on those responses they determined the final size of the wait-list pool. After April 30th any wait-listed applicants can be informed of their application status by emailing Associate Director for Processing. He will inform you if you have been placed in Group One or Group Two. Group One has 30 applicants, and will be selected from first. Group Two has about 120 applicants and will not be selected until all 30 applicants from Group One have been selected. Applicants will not be ranked within either group. Should spots become available after May 1st; appointments will be offered to applicants in Group One based upon overall strength of record and needs of the class.
Word on the street is there have been quite a few applicants declining their appointments this year. Good Luck to everybody! These next few weeks will be tough...

Yup...that's the scoop we got. Son is on pins and needles hoping that he is one of the lucky few. Back up plan in place, good attitude about it all, yet still crossing our fingers that June 30 finds him in New London. :-)

Any idea why prospective candidates are declining their appts? When we called admissions back in Mar to check on son's status we were told at that time that overall apps were down this year, too.
Good luck to those who wait--- will keep my fingers crossed for all of you!

I was a lucky one - just got mine Thursday. I went to visit today and there was another girl who just got hers a week ago. I guess a lot of people declined.

I JUST GOT AN APPOINTMENT! May 06, 2008! I am so excited! I was on the Group One wait list. I was notified by email. =D

CONGRATS Tman!! Welcome aboard... 55 days till R-day!

congrats tman, i've seen you posting on here alot and i know you were pretty anxious. I'll cya on r-day

Thanks guys! I was getting really anxious! I did not think I would know soon enough! I want to send a special thanks to propeller, zachogden, and JustAMomOf4 for your support and encouragement. You guys were right, that I had a chance at getting into the Academy. And your support and encouragements to stay positive really helped! I have already accepted my offer to the United States Merchant Marine Academy and I will have to be calling admissions over there and asking them to withdrawal me ASAP so I don't take somebody's dream of attending USMMA away from them. However before I decline, I am going to do a comparison of the USMMA and USCGA and see what the best fit is for me ultimately. I have a feeling it will be USCGA without a doubt, but I will keep an open mind. =D See ya on R-DAY!

Anyone else in group 2 still hoping? I know in the past some have heard in very late May or early June, but what are the odds? I am guessing, as each day goes by, slim to none. I wish we knew how many waitlister's got in so far...hoping all 30 in group 1 have been asked and that they give a prompt response. The waiting is so hard :-(
Trying to keep the faith...

Shellz -- Hang in there. At every step, the waiting is/has been torture for everyone. If it's yes, it'll be great. If it's no, I'm sure, having made it this far that you have other good options! Keep the faith!!

Stay positive. You still have a chance! In Mid-May they have a much better count on who is going and who is not. A LOT of people wait till the very last minute in deciding if they want to go or not. I am going to say for sure that they are less then 29 people left in Group 1. I am going to guess that I was near the top of the list. So probably AT LEAST 5 out of the 30 if not more has been offered appointments so far... They are still probably trying to get a good class size count. Also they are still a few prep school slots left so there is a chance at that too! If you have something that really stands out like being a good athlete or having something that can contribute to the USCGA you will be higher up on the list in Group 2. Being a good athlete helped me a lot. Just hang in there! Wish you the best of luck!

Tman
Son is still positive, no worries. It's the kind of kid he is, and he will be fine no matter what.
I surely hope those who were lucky enough to be called off the waitlist will make a quick (if you can call waiting for months and months quick) decision. Delaying at this point seems a bit unfair to me. Afterall, if one indicated interest in remaining on the list in the first place, a quick YES! YES! YES! would be the anticipated answer, right? Conversely, if another option is preferred, then jump on it! Either way, other folks are waiting for their big chance.
Please don't take this rant personally...I am sure you will be making your choice sooner rather than later.
For those who don't, consider someone else's position and do what needs to be done.

It does feel miserably lonely waiting out here shelz- but I know we can't be alone. We're just a few of the bunch that actually have posted (I think). Still hoping with you ("saw" you over at the SA board too- Hi).

We did email my D's AO- confirmed that the wait list's are not ranked. Also told us that med waivers will not be looked at until appointment is offered. That piece concerns us as IF she does clear the WL and it is late then that does not give much time to deal with any issues that may arise from the medical side of things.

Nothing has been easy with this.

kgrmom-
Feelin' your pain sister! It has not been an easy ride, but hopefully it will end well for both or our kids.
We cleared the DoDMERB stuff on April 29th, and that was an ordeal in itself. Are you waiting for a waiver? We found it best to be proactive with the medical, sending in letters and more med. info the minute we saw the remedial on the DoDMERB site.
Good luck!

I did not take your rant personally, and I totally understand what you mean. I would not want to make somebody else miss an opportunity of a lifetime just because I could not make up my mind or for that matter make that person wait longer to get there offer. I am currently patiently waiting for the mail to come with my appointment to USCGA, so I can reply with a quick yes. I have used my time while waiting for the mail by looking at my other option (USMMA). Hands down, I think USCGA is the place for me. I truly understand your position, and wish you the best.

tman-
With your attitude, you'll make a fine addition to the CGA. Congratulations again!

Thank you shellz! I truly hope to see your son at R-Day. Keep us all posted as Mid-May approaches. The only tip I can provide is keep his file updated. I updated my file at least once every two weeks. Which means that they have to find my file and add to it, and maybe review some of the other information in it. It also shows that I have a strong interest because I kept updating it frequently and my admissions officer got to know me pretty well. I think admissions officers have a little pull during the admissions board for who they would like to see go the Academy. Add even little things to his file for example: I got selected to go to breakfast by my high school principal for being an outstanding student. I got my principal to write a letter explaining what it was for, and that I still had a strong desire to attend the Academy. Good Luck hope this helps!

Ok, time is ticking by, and we are still hopeful. Anyone have any news on whether or not they will need to go to Group 2 waitlisters?

This is awful. Waiting and hoping and trying to move on with plan B when his heart is still on plan A!

Hi Shellz-

No news here on the WL front :( All we have had is bad news from Dodmerb with a declined medical waiver from USNA so we are waiting now on news of appeal. That does not bode well for what CGA decision will be. DD has applied to both. CG says they will not review until she clears the WL so - that will leave no time for anything I would imagine IF she does manage to clear the list. Pretty much a minefield no matter where we turn.

Praying she ends up where she is meant to be but she feels like that is supposed to be at one of these two academies. I will have a complete meltdown before June.-

Kgrmom

We've heard nothing from USCGA since being told in Group 2. AO has not returned emails since Dec 07. All of the information we receive is straight from the USCGA. Son is still hoping for USCGA, however we have moved on to Plan B. If a late appointment is offered, it will be accepted, but the odds must be pretty low at this point. If anyone has any information regarding waitlisters, please pass it on. Best of luck to everyone.
