Any wait-listed applicants left?

Hang in there kgrmom! They WILL end up where they are supposed to be...have faith. It's hard to admit, that after 18 years of being in control of our kids lives, that we are most definitely NOT in control of this new phase.

Now, will they end up where WE want them to be (or where they want to be...) maybe not. But, in the end I am sure all will be well. The kind of kids who apply to service academies are, in my opinion, a great bunch, regardless of their admission status. They will land on their feet and do well somewhere else.

Now, back to waiting anxiously....I should take my own advice. :-)

I am going to guess that sometime around next week, they will have a pretty good figure on class size and how many slots are left. I was told that a lot of applicants that were accepted were holding off to the last minute or requesting extended time before they made a decision. Those granted the extended time get another week or two, to decide, or at least that is what is sounded like when I talked to my admissions officer. They really want to make sure that you want to attend the Academy, so they give people with appointments offers plenty of time to make the right decision. I was told that most of these folks waiting longer to accept were early acceptance folks. So soon, we will see slots opening up more. Hang in there. I know it is hard.

I know some have heard very late in the game in the past, but I am thinking the gig is up for our DS. Still no word, and not a mention of group 2 applicants getting the nod on this board or the SA forum.
Not totally giving up, but reality is tough to ignore. On to plan B!
Many heartfelt congratulations to all headed to New London on June 30! You will do your parents and country proud, I am certain!

Have you called Admissions to get a current status?

They should be able to tell you if they have "closed" the class yet.

Last year, "final" rejection letters were dated and mailed on May 21st.

I know a 2011 cadet who received an appointment on 5/18/2007 and accepted on 5/24/2007

He was given one week to accept or decline

It is possible to still get a late appointment......but time is running out

good luck

I think there was a big wave of people declining, and they suddenly has a good amount to give out late, but I think the majority of those people took it so it seems like this might be it for this year. I heard our class size is 375.

Luigi,
I called today, but given the graduation I doubt we will hear anything back. Thanks for the nudge. We were hesitant to call, not wanting to be too pushy, but at this point there isn't much to lose. So, we still have a tiny speck of hope , but son is currently taking placement tests at back up school. All will be well, and I am sure he will be happy there. Who knows? He may try again next year...

Class size of 375! That would be incredible!

I think I got a letter a while back that said they were setting it at 275 - where did you hear such a big number?

No way would it be 375...ha ha.

I concur, Boss51.

A 40% increase in class size (compared to last year's 272) would be quite remarkable.

My son's letter said you're one of 275

Well, I think everyone at the CGA has closed up shop and gone home. Voice mailboxes are full, no one picking up phones. Geez. I am hoping we get something in the mail today. Any news, at this point, would be appreciated.
Frustrated...and bummed that DS will have to wait yet another day to be told he just didn't cut it.
Ok...enough of the pity party ;-)
Have a GREAT day!

I think the pressure is on them as much as it is on you and your son. Imagine them trying to sort the final acceptances out, make contact with those next on the list, and assemble the best class they can WHILE at the same time, receiving the forms/fingerprint cards, etc from those appointed earlier (June 1 is the deadline for all that)!

We called this morning and got full voicemail, but called back this afternoon and got through....so I'm sure it's a nightmare on their end too! Hang in!

Shellz-

If your son and my daughter don't make the "cut" let's go with the theory that it' not because they were not good enough- it is because the academy can only accept 275 applicants and we both know that there are definately more than 275 qualified (more than qualified) applicants out there. Ours are two of them as they are on the wait list. They have to cut it down somehow.

Ok- you are catching me trying to be positive. I do believe it's true it's just harder to swallow when it's your own son or daughter that is is on the "cut" side.

kgrmom-
Good job being positive. I was sorely lacking in a positive perspective when I posted this morning, so thanks for reminding me just how great my (your) kid is. He will do well wherever he lands :-)
I called back this afternoon, and while I still am waiting for an answer, at least the voice mailbox wasn't full....!
Have a great day.

Here's one of the biggest problems with admissions (from my viewpoint):

High school seniors who want to 'collect' admissions to all of the Academies. They are only interested in one or two, but want the honor/prestige of writing in their newspaper article that they were one of (blank) in their state to receive admission to all academies.

Now how do you sort through all this clutter in Admissions? Who really wants to be at CGA or who just submitted their applications for s&g?

There's nothing wrong with spending a year at a local college, university, or military academy if you need to take another shot at admissions the next year. The incoming cadet will be a year wiser and more appreciative of the experience.

Good luck. I hope all of you receive word soon so you know how to plan.

Remember Thomas Edison's quote: I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

This phenomenon extends to civilian schools. Kids are applying to so many schools, but obviously can only pick one. They choose a school, then all of a sudden a spot opens at their "dream" school. I heard this even happened at Harvard, which for the first time had to dig into their waiting list. Those kids then opened up spots at "secondary" dream schools. It created a domino effect up and down the spectrum. I think the CGA had a similar situation this year and it is causing some of the difficulties. I blame parents, counselors, high schools, and yes some of the students themselves for this kind of problem. The whole process is getting out of hand.

To quote an admissions officer who posted on the official USCGA bulletin board this morning:

"We still might pull a couple of people off of the waitlist, but the class is pretty much full at this point."

FYI: My USCGA advisor just sent me an email today telling me Group 2 is going to be closed on Monday. For anyone else on the Group 2 wait list, we are out of luck until next year.

Rotckid-
You got an email? I am impressed. We haven't heard anything since the waitlist email. We kind of figured it was a long shot, being in group 2, but hope dies hard. Maybe next year!
Good luck to everyone. Make it a good year, class of 2012!
