<p>It's not a question of whether the average OOS student has a higher SAT than the average IS student. That is obvious and no one would dispute it. The question is how great that disparity is. I would venture a guess that without taking into account lower-scoring athletes and legacies (which would likely be disproportionately in-state), the difference is not more than 100 pts. I've made other comparisons such as the average SAT scores for OOS and IS scholarship winners in the Scholarships thread, so I'll not repeat them here.</p>
<p>My reason for bringing this up is not to set up some kind of competition between in-state and out-of-state students. The priimary point that I've been trying to make is that the qualifications of the top IS and OOS UNC students are similar and that there is no justification for awarding out-of-state students a full ride while an equally qualified in-state student receives an award worth less than half as much.</p>
