Have any waitlisters on CC gotten in yet? Just curious.

If my understanding is correct, waitlisted applicants will not hear back from Rice until May 1st at the earliest. Rice needs to see who all matriculates before taking students off the waitlist because they want to make sure the class is the right size, etc.

When I matriculated in 2006, I heard back on April 27, but that was unusually early. My advice is to commit to a different school, forget about Rice, and just let whatever happens happen.

FA is correct. Unless there is an unusually low yield (unlikely with the record number of applications and interest), you will find out when everyone commits on May 1st.

Also, if people are admitted off the w/l at other colleges but had commited to rice, their spots would open up.

Good luck!

My D is still waiting to hear about the wait list. She is going forward with another choice, but interested to see if she gets pulled of the list.

last year I hear back on april 23 which was surprising. good luck guys

nothing yet

Still Waiting. Perhaps middle to end of next week??

Unusually implies that this doesn’t happen very often, so my post is most likely valid. Not saying you can’t hope it will come earlier, just saying that you shouldn’t expect anything any sooner than May 1st.

Good luck!

Does anyone know how they select people to be taken off of the waitlist?

nothing yet!

@syphax - Once May 1st comes and Rice has a list of everyone who has(n’t) matriculated, they will decide whether they want to take any more applicants from the waitlist to fill any spots in the freshman class that were left open. If so, I believe (NOTE: I’m not sure they do it this way, but this is how most top schools with holistic admissions do it) they review every waitlistee’s application again - the people on the waitlist are not ranked. They look for the people who will best fill the spot that is left open. For example, if they need another person who loves painting and visual arts, they will probably look for someone off the waitlist to match that description.

Rice wants a well-rounded class with lots of diversity, so don’t just want to pull off engineers if they already have enough engineers.

But rest-assured, this is better than having a number assigned to your name and getting pulled off only if that number is less than the number of spots they need to fill. At least your application is guaranteed another review. Good luck with it! :)

Sweet, I applied as engineering…

I’m not saying they have too many engineers! I was just using that as an example.

I was waitlisted last year and I applied as engineering. I think I found out very early in May. I would just let them know that you’re still interested. Don’t think too hard about it but maybe look back at your application and try to figure out where you could have improved. If you write them a follow-up letter, address that there. That worked for me.

Great advice, HKCool.

I sent them updates about awards I’ve won and a few snippets of why I would like to go to Rice, it’s just discouraging getting deferred from ED then waitlisted RD. Ill probably send them another e-mail before May 1st.
