Any waitlisters heard back?

Her class size is about 800. Four are going to Stanford, the largest contingent in the area.
She wanted to get into the Rice-Baylor program, but did not get chosen for an interview. She was accepted by the Ivies and also many combined BSMD programs.
This year, it looks like Houston/Texas applicants to Rice are not doing too well. Only one in her class is going to Rice; while the rest were wait-listed or denied. Their stats were great and I thought they were shoe-ins. These students instead will matriculate at Columbia, Penn, Cornell, Duke, Brown etc. It’s a crap-shoot. University of Chicago, a “safety” school, rejected my daughter outright. Rice may be favoring out of staters to increase its profile.
I believe Rice is popular now, hence the higher yield because of the lower tuition, generous financial aid packages and weak economy. Rice has a huge endowment so the operating budget does not solely depend on tuition. In fact, Rice used to be free.
Good luck to you guys.

:( Well, that was a waste of like 2 extra months of hoping. Good luck to everyone, looks like I’m going to Emory!

congratulations to your daughter. It is surprising that people are getting into Ivy league from Houston but rejected by Rice! Last year Rice admitted 24 from Bellaire HS and 14 went but I have nt seen any numbers this year. I think they admitted several from St. Johns. If the yield has gone up this year to a level of not admitting anyone from waitlist, they may cut the number of admits or increase the number of seats next year.

Which BS/MD programs did your daughter get into?

How do you know if you’re still on the waitlist?

It looks like they have released the waitlist - so that would mean that no one is on the waitlist. I’m sorry! :frowning: But you have a bright future ahead of you, and you may just LOVE your other college - there are many wonderful, wonderful colleges out there and yours will offer you opportunities and friends and education and all that good stuff… and if it doesn’t, and you’ve given it your best shot, then apply for a transfer. Good luck, y’all! :)

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how large the class size is this year?

They will probably announce in August when the dust settles with some of the people leaving because their waitlist cleared elsewhere.

golfblackhole - There has been uproar about HPME interviewees being waitlisted for NU admissions if they did nt get admitted to HPME. Did your daughter make the interview?

@PeteyW - I would like to know that too. I’m also curious as to what this year’s yield percentage is; how much higher it is than last year.

Rice met its target incoming class size of 950 with '14s. It should be the same for '15s.

I actually read an article on the Thresher that said the yield rate was lower despite a large number of acceptances. Very interesting information. I suspect the growing applicant pool is partly due to the fact that an increasing number of students on track for Ivy Leagues are applying to Rice.

Link to article: [Acceptance rate drops - The Rice Thresher - Rice University](http://www.ricethresher.org/acceptance-rate-drops-1.2230076)

mogrigoogle - The article seems to state that they accepted a lower percentage of students (this happened because the number of applications went up by 1500) and admitted 80 fewer students than last year and expect the same number of admittees of 950 out of 2500. It is not stating the yield has dropped since they are referring to acceptance rate of students to the school.

Oops, sorry! You are absolutely correct. I meant the acceptance rate was lower because of a large number of applicants, but I worded it all wrong. Thank you for the correction.

My D has not received an email and is still showing as waitlisted on Esther. Have they not updated, or are they still keeping a few for drop outs??

My D waited long enough and finally called admissions. They informed her that the waitlist had been released. NO EMAIL and HER STATUS was still not updated. I feel that RICE was extremely unprofessional in this matter! They could certainly make time to update the admission site!

Plagmah, I am sorry to hear about the insensitive lack of communication regarding your D’s status. It is frustrating because often times, the website and electronic communication is all that is available, so it is natural to think it is correct until changed. My D experienced this on a couple of other college websites. They often will state to expect a lag of three weeks for updates (for records processing etc), but when your child’s hopes and decision are dependent on a website update or mass e-mail it feels like being marginalized. Best of luck to your daughter. Now she can get on with her summer and plans for a great college experience.

Sorry to hear that, Plagmah! Several years ago, DS got an email from a Rice Prof in response to a question of his. It is only by luck that he saw it, since it ended up in his SPAM mailbox, instead of his inbox. Is it possible that this happened to your daughter? It is unusual to happen to an individual piece of email (as was the case with my son), but sometimes happens with big mailings. Kids who clean out their spam mailbox without viewing the contents can inadvertently delete important mail. P.S. Hope your daughter enjoys her college choices.

I have to say that the email did not go into her spam folder…just for fun, I checked her app status on Rice Esther moments ago and it STILL shows as waitlist!

not impressed with Rice…

My D is a Ramblin Wreck from Georgia Tech! BME

Awesome news - Georgia Tech is a great school! But, please don’t equate someone in the admissions office at Rice with all of Rice U!

Harvard removed a bunch of people from waitlist but still kept a few. May be that is the case here? The only way to know is to call.

This kind of fits in with the topic since it involves waitlists, but I heard that Rice’s class of 2015 will have around 1,100 people, over 200 more than they had expected. That explains why they didn’t go to the waitlist this year.
