Any way to drop from record?

Hey guys, I have this horrible precalc teacher plus had 2 other sciences this semester the timing and his teaching cost me the grade. I think I will end up with a C. I have A's in my major classes such as Chem, Bio. Is there any way to drop this class from your record in the future? Maybe retake it for a better grade? What is the best option for me, this will definitly drop my gpa.

It probably won’t matter much. You can retake it, but grad schools will still see both grades on your transcript. There is a way to drop entire semesters from your academic history, but you can’t pick and choose classes and you have to wait a few years. You’d have to eliminate the entire semester, however, so you’d lose your bio and chem as well.

Why won’t it matter much? in my calculations this definitely drops my GPA

@Grimes – to be fair, you can’t pick and choose at MOST schools, SBCC is an exception to that rule, which is why I talk about those 3 Fs spread out over 2 semesters that can be 86ed. Check your school’s AR policy but don’t get your hopes up because most won’t… although if you’re honors you can always show SBCC’s policy to the honors counselor and see if they’ll find it interesting/attempt to enact it at the campus.

@qw1478: It won’t matter much for a couple reasons.

The last grades UCs factor into your admission decision are those from the fall semester. Anything you take after this semester is entirely useless as far as your GPA is concerned. Your admission decision will be made prior to the spring grades coming out.

Secondly, if you opt to go to grad school, your upper division UC classes are much more important to them than your lower division CC courses.

To compound this, most CCs won’t even let you retake a course if you passed it previously with a C or better and UCs/most grad schools will take your first passing grade, not any subsequent grades you earn thereafter.

It’s really not worth your time. Your chances of it helping at all are slim to none. Your CC will have to let you retake a class you already passed and your grad school will have to overlook that you already passed it in favor of the higher grade. It’s safe to say that isn’t going to happen.

@Itachir: Correct, some do, but the vast majority don’t.

Thanks for clearing it up, I feel a little better now. But I am not applying anytime soon, maybe in a year. So my precalc GPA might count, as it would show when I apply next year. Another thing, I am planning to take Calc 1, 2, 3. If I get all A’s in those will the UC kind of ignore the precalc since they see that I got As in the higher courses.

@qw1478: The UCs that do comprehensive reviews will acknowledge upward grade trends to an extent, but none of your UC-transferable courses will be “ignored.”

If you nail As in all those courses, I wouldn’t worry too much about one C. Just keep your overall GPA high.

Just to clear something up about “retaking” this class and having the C “replaced” with a better grade. UC’s DO NOT replace C grades for your better grade, they will simply average the two grades. The “replacing” is only allowed for grades of D, F and NP.

In addition, most CCC’s do not permit students to retake classes unless they recieved a grade of D, F or NP.

So stick with what everyone above said, deal with the grade and just keep your gpa as high a possible moving forward.

Another possibility how about I convince some way that the professor give me an Incomplete, so I retake the class next semester. What do you think?

You ‘earned’ the C, so take it and be happy with it. You know what sucks? I got a C in my physics class and was a borderline B. -_-

goes to his room to cry

lol jk. It’s like getting a scratch on your car, eventually you just learn to accept them and hope you don’t get another one.

yeeeppp^^^^^^

andd if it makes you feel any better, i have a big shiny F on my transcript…But luckily its not UC transferable. However, that doesn’t stop law schools from factoring it in…

really does go into her room to cry

I have an F on my transcript too, akin to the shadow left behind on a building when they pull a sign off, because it came from a class I retook later.

Getting a grade like that does wonders for the ego, especially when you begin to question if you’re “good enough” for a given major lol ^^

OTOH, if you turn around and manage to pass… who cares? You’re obviously capable of doing what you need to do.

I also had a terrible precalc professor this semester! I absolutely feel your pain. At least you passed though!
I understood the material, but he’s one of those “If you can’t answer the hardest brain-crushing questions I can possibly make, then you are ■■■■■■■■ and don’t deserve to pass” kind of people. For instance, my friend took AP Calculus in high school, and she was getting a high B in this class. After the brain-raping final exam she got a D! I was getting a C in the class. After getting my a$$ kicked by that final I received a D. My chances of transferring into UCSC for Fall '11 are now uncertain.

Don’t worry so much about one C.
Move on, don’t let it ruin your confidence because remember that is still a passing grade!
Listen to the above posters, they know what they are talking about.
