Did you hear yet? How long did it take?

My D got an invitation, but could not put it together in time due to her XC season going longer than expected, she is just doing the Common App, hope you hear soon - Allegheny is a great school!

Looking at last year's posts, someone was notified on Dec 12th with the Leadership Application.

My son actually heard on Saturday and was accepted with a trustee scholarship (amount to be determined) so we are all happy (it's his first acceptance letter)! So it took a little over 2 weeks to get a response.

Has anybody visited the school? What did you think? Any comments in general?

I graduated from Allegheny back in the dark ages. We go back to campus every few years for alumni events. One of my sons applied and was accepted a few years ago, but chose to go somewhere else.

The campus is lovely. It is located about a mile up the hill from downtown Meadville. It is a mix of old and new buildings. They work hard at keeping buildings and programs updated and there is usually some building or remodeling project going on. Their strongest academic programs are chemistry, biology, psych, environmental science, geology, poli sci, history and English. The professors have always been very involved with students and are very accessible. Class discussions are expected and class sizes are usually small enough to encourage that.

I have many close friends from Allegheny that I continue to have regular contact with in spite of the fact that we live all over the country. I think this is pretty common for Allegheny alumni. The college stresses the intregration of subjects and tries to get students to see the connections between things. My Allegheny education allowed me to become a critical thinker. I completely changed fields a few years after graduation but my education served me well nonetheless because I had learned how to apply basic principals across disciplines.

Hubby is also a graduate. He was admitted to a top grad program in his field (chemistry) and felt very well prepared. We both would have been very pleased if any of our 3 kids had chosen to attend there, but they had other ideas ;)

Thanks for the info. My son is undecided but primarily interested in something analytical and/or quantitative like math/statistics, economics or computers. Allegheny actually was low on his list originally, in fact, he only applied because they sent him the free app and I thought it wouldn't hurt. Now that it's his first acceptances, it's jumped to #3 on his list of favorites! He's even checked out the team stats (he's an avid sports fan) and sweatshirts.

Is the school spirited? Are students enthusiastic about about sporting events. I know they are Div III, which doesn't matter to him, he just likes to attend sporting events, particularly basketball and football.

I believe they plan an overnight visit for acceptees which he will definitely do unless he hears from and is accepted to his #1 & 2 choices (which are both big, public Us).

When I attended back in the day, students were pretty supportive of sports. There was pretty big attendance at football and basketball games. Swimming was well attended. I had friends on women's basketball and I often attended those as well. I imagine that support ebbs and flows depending on which team is doing well in a given year, but overall, I think they have pretty good support from the students. Also, computer science is quite strong at Allegheny as well. I good friend of mine was a comp. sci major and is currently the Chief Information Officer of a major computer consulting firm. He never attended grad school.

Thanks again Shennie. The more I read about it the more I like it. The weather and location don't thrill me, but I think my son would be fine.

Son applied with the VIP ap but did not hear back yet. It's been longer than 2 weeks for him though.

Could someone tell me when the VIP app. was sent out to prospies? We visited so I wanted to know before my kid applies using the common app next year. Also, what are the advantages of using the VIP vs. the common app?

I think my son received his (via email) in October. I guess the biggest advantage is it's free.

My daughter didn't use the VIP application. Since she had everything completed on the common application she submitted that for regular decision. She received an acceptance letter on Friday and that she would receive the trustee scholarship. They said they wanted to let her know early. She likes Allegheny but it is her safety.

handemom, Thanks! Also, Congratulations handemom!

boomer, Congratulations to your D!

Son accepted today.

Also rec'd the Trustee Scholarship. Anxiously awaiting dollar amount on that.

I visited Allegheny and it's a beautiful campus! The school is wonderful! It's my top choice but I don't feel that i'll get accepted as I see that notifications have come much earlier than now. =/

Daniellamarie, my son is still waiting to hear, but that's largely due to his school being slow to send out their forms/transcript. Don't worry - there's still a lot of notification time left - I don't think they've filled their freshman class yet! And I agree, Allegheny's campus is quite lovely.
