Anybody decide for sure yet?

For those recently admitted to Denison, has anyone made a decision yet, and if not, where are you in the process? My DD is leaning heavily toward Denison, as she has since she visited a couple of months ago. But I think more than anything just wants to have the decision made and the anxiety over, especially as she sees more and more of her friends commit to various schools!

She has been admitted to all 5 schools she applied to, has ruled out a couple, and is waiting for financial aid info from a couple, including Denison. Barring any surprises (I doubt she gets much from the other school, Davidson, as we already know she didn't get any merit aid there), I think we're still going to be looking at a few thousand dollars difference between Denison and her second choice, Mary Washington, which is in-state for us. Then we'll all need to sit down and crunch numbers and she'll need to decide whether Denison is worth an investment of student loans and more work on her part. She'll probably also have to keep applying for outside scholarships as she goes through school. Our position has been since the beginning, that we will foot the bill for anything up to the cost of an in-state school (since that's what we can realistically afford, although our EFC thinks we can afford more :-), and anything above and beyond that she'll need to be responsible for through scholarships, loans and work. I think she's close enough with the scholarship she's gotten from Denison and 1 outside scholarship to make it happen, but I really want her to understand and make the decision responsibly because it will probably mean a difference of taking out some loans in her name to go there, vs. graduating without debt from the state school. I also glanced at the Financial Aid Review form and was pleased/surprised to see that we actually qualify for 2 of the "unusual circumstances" where you can ask for a review of your need-----the primary one is that I am still paying quite a bit on my own student loans (one of the reasons I am very careful with DD taking on debt, because I took on way too much not realizing the implications when I went to grad school), and we are also paying tuition for her younger sister's high school. I don't know that either of those will make a significant difference, but even if it means she might qualify for a subsidized loan vs. unsubsidized its worth asking.

Personally, I have been nothing but impressed with Denison so far. I asked the swim coach a couple of questions via email and his response was so nice about DD that it almost made me cry! (and she's not a superstar, by any means!! Believe me, their team will not suffer if she ends up elsewhere, but he made it sound like there will be a vast emptiness in the pool if she doesn't go there <g>). That has been the case with everyone we've come in contact with there and what DD has picked up on...they make the student feel like they are really important and special, and that they would truly be HONORED to have her choose to attend. That philosophy is undoubtedly why they continue to have such strong alumni support and loyalty!</g>

Pretty sure my s has chosen to go to Denison. We are waiting for the fin aid package to come through to decide for sure. If they meet Woosters offer, he will to to Denison. I believe they mailed out their Fin aid stuff on 3/31. Hoping to get it tomorrow or Tuesday. He got merit aid from Wooster and an alumn award from Dension. I am hoping Denison is just as genorous with grant money as Wooster is. Let me know how you do. Good luck :)

My D is waiting to hear from one more school, Whitman. So, we are still behind the starting line in the decision making process!

She is considering Denison, Puget Sound, and the non-LAC-like UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis. She was waitlisted at Scripps and Kenyon, and is not sure if she wants to stay on either list. She was also admitted to Willamette, Oregon and Santa Cruz, but they are not on her short list.

I think she liked Denison more than Puget Sound. While Puget Sound was a pleasant surprise, Denison excited her. But, Denison is far away, there are not many students from the west coast, and she has not yet connected with the swim coach there. Puget Sound is closer and easy to travel to, and the swim coach was very welcoming. Denison gave her a lot more merit money than Puget Sound, but I'm not sure how big a factor that will be in the end.

If she gets in to Whitman, or is waitlisted, that will have a big impact on the decision. Whitman is a wonderful school. It's closer (although it is about as expensive to fly there as to Ohio), she can swim there, and she knows there will be lots of other "left coast" kids there.

I don't think a UC is the best environment for her, but she will probably visit one or both sometime before May 1. It's hard to beat UCSB's location.

She wants to go to the Denison spring overnight program next (!) weekend to get a better sense of what life would be like there, and who her fellow students would be. I have to find out if they can put her up for two nights, Sat. as well as Sun. (The earliest she could arrive at the Columbus airport would be 4 pm, so she would miss a lot of the program if she didn't come until Sun.)

I agree that Denison has done a great job. When we visited in February, everyone was extremely nice. My daughter also feels very important and "wanted," and that is influencing her thinking.

I sure hope the final decision from Whitman comes tomorrow. It feels like we can't really move ahead until we have all the pieces of the puzzle.

Are your kids going to the spring overnight?

P.S. Lewis1212, I have been noting all your comments about the swim coach. My D is going to get in touch with him this week, and set up some time to meet with him when she visits.

Rix,
Good luck to your D with Whitman and all her decisions! We've decided that my daughter won't be going back to visit Denison this April. She has a very busy month with several weekend obligations for school and church, prom, has her senior project due, and then of course AP exams coming up not too long after that. We told her, and she agreed that she has a good sense of the campus and community from her previous visit and knows that she really likes it, so we'd rather she not use the $$ or time in April and we'll all just go out in June for the orientation if she enrolls.

Same thing here- too busy this month with exams ect.... I think June is a match for us too.I wasn't able to visit the campus the first time around and can't wait to see it.
