Anybody else get this scholarship letter?

They are asking me to confirm my National Merit Finalist status with them. I'm not a Finalist, so I don't know why they sent me this letter (high SAT scores perhaps? Although my PSAT was 200 points lower...). They did say they have scholarships for non NMFs, so maybe I'll be considered for those.

Did anyone else get this letter? I was invited to the CAS Reception last Saturday, by the way.

I got it too. I'm commended, but not a finalist. I guess they want us to tell them if we got upped to finalist status or not. Did everyone get that CAS Reception letter that got the scholarship letter? Our mail gets lost all the time, so I dunno. :-(

Gah, I posted this topic 3 minutes after you posted yours. Sorry for the spam >_<

I think they send this to every applicant. Its more like, who didnt get this letter?

I don't think they send it to everyone. You would have had to identify yourself as a National Merit Commended Student for them to even inquire after your finalist status. Plus, it doesn't seem like many people got it.

i didnt get it, and i told them i was a semi-finalist, and just recently found out i ended up as a finalist =/

i reported my college choice to the national merit people as "undecided," though, could that have made a difference?

It was dated March 17th, snail mail may have just not delivered it to you as of yet.

I'm sure that they already know you're a finalist. I ended up not getting finalist status, which is probably why they didn't hear. Did you get that invite to the CAS reception?

ryan - yeah thats true. but last time nyu sent out a letter i got it on the same day as people in ny and nj and va and other such places, even though they were all postmarked the same (and i live in tx). thats just why im a bit worried

hvdesai - i dont think they would have heard, since i technically dont have national merit informing them yet, i still need to change my college choice from undecided to nyu. anddd no, not to cas, but i did get the tisch one, so i know im in. hopefully this means youre in too!

I hope so. I've had that irrational fear that's like "hey, you're not going to get in ANYWHERE." Everyone who got this scholarship letter DID get the CAS reception invite, though, and I haven't. Our mail is always getting lost/being delayed. Oh, and, the deadline to send the notification is tomorrow, so you might want to just fax your finalist notification today. The fax number should be on the website.

hv, I didnt get the invite to the CAS reception. So there you go. Although I expect to get in to NYU; but not any scholarship money.

I didn't put down that I was a commended student on my app. I only got a 198 on my PSATs (really bad day, hah)

So either they sent this to people with high SATS or to everyone. Its probably insignificant.

Hmm...I wonder if all ADMITTED applicants got this scholarship letter, not necessarily people who put that they were commended scholars? After all, they do scholarship deliberation AFTER they admit the class (says the admissions officer I spoke to today). Just speculation, all of this anxiety is getting to me.

just out of curiosity, whats this scholarship deliberation you are talking about? when i asked about nm finalist scholarships at the beginning of this school year i was told that you just get $1000, end of story

Nah, they've got a pretty awesome scholarship for finalists. If you show leadership, cultural involvment etc. etc. and are a National Merit Finalist you get a hefty scholarship, definitely more than just $1,000. It's worth sending in your status.

P.S.: I looked that information up on the NYU website a while ago (Fall-ish). You can probably still look it up there.

It's a minimum of $8k/year I believe.

i remember trying to look (im on that website wayyyy too much for my own good) but never found anything. huh. oh well, ill send it in when my mom gets up (lol i so dont know how to use our fax machine...) but i guess i dont wanna know anymore about it cuz i shouldnt get my hopes up =) especially since i havent gotten this letter....

thanks for the info though!

omgitsjack....where did you hear the $8000 a year? seriously dude, i asked two people (once in an email and once on the bulletin board) and they were like yeah....$1000. (i totally believe you guys, im sure they were just saying that in case of certain circumstances or something, but i wish they would have said more than that!)

Oh, this letter is only for CAS students. At least, that's what the letter says.

Scrapnel, it was sent to CAS students, so I don't think you need to send anything quite yet. But if you were a National Merit Finalist then you should get some sort of scholarship...
I got the letter, and I'm not a National Merit Finalist. In fact, I don't even think I was commended. At least, if I ever received anything, no one in my family told me and it got thrown away....
