Anybody else HATE how film production/cinematography major has different names?

It ****es me off to no end to see communications, media arts, and the like. Why can't all schools in NY follow NYU and call the major Film Production/Cinematography? It's so telling and it's much more respectable. It says exactly what it offers through it's name and I don't have to look at course offerings to see whether the major is for TV, Film, Radio, or Journalism.

I mean wouldn't all these different names confuse employers?

I had to explore course offerings for the CUNY and SUNY schools because of their "media arts", and "communications & media" labels. I will go to NYU eventually though, as a transfer(If the money's there) or a graduate(the money should be there, I hope). I just hope the CUNY or SUNY film programs are good and will allow me to have smooth transition into NYU's film program.

So, can anyone tell me which SUNY/CUNY schools have great film programs? I understand Purchase has a good one but what about the others like, Oneonta or City College?

Another thing, What exactly is film studies? Is it just theory, or could it also involve production and cinematography?

I don’t know much about film but I do feel for you all these jargons are confusing.
but
here is what I know
There is not much money you’d get from NYU. It maybe the least school you could count on making it affordable. tuition itself is more than 42K, it will only go up every year.

Have to read course listing/description is actually a good thing. You should read up and ask questions all you can before it’s too late, there is no guarantee listing means there will be such course, even there is, no way knowing you could get in to take it, especially in big schools. Be suspicious and dig deep, do not slack off on this easy part - actually going to school will be hard part. If you got parents do that for you, good, but parents can be the root of the problems. I say, better do it yourself.
One of my favorite thread in CC is about AmericanU, one mom kept whining about her D’s would be art major freshman year experience. Here, you do not want this to happen to you.
research, read up how year to year requirement is constructed, what else besides film you have to do and when.

It’s not only NY. Going from school to school in any state the major will be called something completely different so it’s hard to search for.

I’ve always taken film studies to be more of a theory type program. Some of these programs will include production courses but others will not. In my opinion, if you choose one of these programs you better make sure you take some production classes. The degree seems pretty useless if you don’t know how to apply these techniques and theories…

I am applying to UCLA graduate film school. I have to choose between production/cinematography, a four year program and production/directing, a three year program. I’d rather learn cinematography over directing but I am applying to both programs to increase my chances. All the other graduate schools I am applying to only have production/directing as an option.
I am a native New Yorker but I really found NYU employers and students off putting . The only school I am applying to on the east coast is Columbia. I had an appointment with Columbia a week ago, looked around the film department, listened in on a class and asked many questions to alumni. I realize by going to the school myself Columbia wins over NYU in my book.

I was a transfer student back in 2009. Although I got accepted to some well established film programs on the west coast, they did not offer enough scholarship money. It was really frustrating. I ended up taking a transfer honors scholarship at a university in Hawaii to study Multimedia with a concentration in Video production. Fortunately, two of my professors are USC film alumni and I am using them as references!

to answer your questions,
good suny/cuny film programs on the east coast:
-Purchase
-syracuse (my mom’s school)
-Buffalo
-Hunter
-Brooklyn College

film studies is theory. I have a A.A. degree in Cinema Studies. This particular program also included Digital Filmmaking but it was mostly theory courses:cinema studies, documentary film, theatre, communication, philosophy, and literature courses which prepared me for my area of study.

It frustrates me too, however there isn’t really all that much we can do about it!
