Just had orientation. See the other “Forest” post for my description of that dorm.

Ace550…is this your orientation (your visit next month). I am thinking of doing a long post describing orientation because there is a lot I’d like to have known beforehand that would have helped (I’m a Detail-aholic). But I’m just back at work and a bit swamped/behind.

So…just quickly…dorms are only open for tours on day 2 of your orientation 1p-3p. But they’re a BIt flexible. And…there may be another orientation group there the day before you. So…if you skip afternoon session on day 1…you might get to see more dorms on that day if that’s more important. Though I got something out of every session I attended. And, if your child is unlucky (like mine), they might be in advising during the entire open dorm time period. I plan on sending mine back on another orientation day to look around and get tours (they said that was fine). We stayed at Biddle Hotel. It’s a good central place to be if you can swing a room there (and cheap!..Hilton Garden Inn was $161 when we booked, but the Biddle became available and we got it for $119). Mold in the showers was the ONLY issue I had with the hotel. Well, and no “real” food except Tudor buffet at lunch.

Thanks for the detailed description. My twin boys will be attending IU next year. We are visiting IU since we will be in the Indianapolis area. I am trying to give the boys some ideas about the campus, the dorms, and the facilities so that they can decide early on their application. I think that I have got a pretty good idea thanks to all posters on this forum.

I hope that your daughter can get into the dorm she likes.

Snake…I will say this - I toured Forest tower B and the room was a REFRIGERATOR. ICE cold. And it was an in-room thermostat that you control yourself.

I was and again will be an RA so you can trust my answers to these questions:

1)It will take around 1 minute to go to Read from Forest and food will be open from 6am to midnight every day. Wilkie C-Store (like a CVS or Walgreens) is open until 10 or 11 at night and is only 2 minutes away. Both routes are extremely lit up and safe.

2) If your student is a Chem major it will NEVER take more than 15 minutes by walking and, at least as a freshmen, if the weather isn’t nice a bus will take them down 3rd street where the bulk of their classes will be.

3) This would be my specialty. I was both a resident and RA for Forest’s Honors program and it is fantastic! Each neighborhood has one dorm with 1-3 honors floors. Forest, in the south, with 3 floors (the oldest and largest), Teter in central, with 2 floors, and Briscoe in the North with 1 floor (the newest).

1) How long would it take for a chem freshman to walk from Teter to classes?
2) Why would Forest Coop Double/Briscoe Coop Dbl. Room cost less than other rooms?

I applied for the Briscoe Co-op without knowing anything about, just because it was cheaper! Apparently it is cheaper because you do some general chores on your floor, vacuuming the hallway etc

Definitely do the co-op if at all possible. The chores are very minimal, about 30 minutes every week or two. The floor and amenities are just the same as any other floor.
