Did anyone recieve a paper inside their acceptance packet saying that Stanford will pay up to $500 for their flight to April Admit Weekend?

If you did, did you use a waiver on your application? I don't know who they gave these to...

i got one and i did not use a waiver. i pretty sure they just go by your financial situation

I assumed that everyone got it, but in fact I never asked around. I received one as well back when I got in, and I did not use a waiver.

Oh, and the travel grant covered me, but not my dad, even though our combined expenses were less than $500.

not everyone gets them, I believe it's based on your financially need. i also heard they give them to minorities

I live in Taiwan...I was actually hoping they'd give me the travel grant just for the distance :) Well, I guess I'll have to hear about how wonderful Admit Weekend was from you guys! :)

Hey ROCKao, don't worry. I will be with you too, in the sense that we can't go to Admit Weekend.

I'm with both of you on that one as well. It'd be silly to fly 25 hours there, spend 48 hours at the event itself, then fly 25 hours back...more time in the air than on the ground (not to mention the cost!).

Yikes! Hopefully some people will be willing to post pictures or itinerary of what they did =]

Haha, yea.

Celestial605, have you been to Admit Weekend before?

Yes, I went to Admit Weekend in April 2004.

Haha, how about telling us your experience and showing some photos? :D

actually, i went to admit weekend and really didn't like it. i'm at stanford now, though, and i LOVVVVVEEEEEEEE it! i dated a stanford student for 9 months so i had experienced the nightlife and classes when i visited him (every 3 weeks or so). then i visited for admit weekend, got put in a ****ty dorm, and felt like i was at summer camp because they restricted alcohol use and had all of these "bonding" parties. i do NOT need alcohol to have fun, but when i walked down the row all the houses were dead - not normal for a regular weekend - and there weren't any parties that weren't contrived by the admit weekend staff. i know that they tried to do a good job, but the whole thing felt a little strange for me... i would almost suggest trying to stay with someone that you know and having them show you around on a different weekend. you could sit in on classes, go to events, etc - there just wouldn't be as many information sessions. you might have to be a bit more motivated, but i think you can get a great sense of this school if you were to come here on a normal thursday and friday. then again, if you're shy or aren't into the party scene at all then you might do fine at aw. almost all of the info that they tell you at aw is stuff you can find online, the only upside of it is that i know people that are really good friends with people that they met at aw.

another random tidbit: i would suggest NOT adding random people on facebook. when you meet them in person they are often very different from their profiles and can even be awkward. i would say that if you want to chat with your classmates do it through messages...

if anyone has any other questions, though, and wants answers either on here or through pm feel free to ask!

I agree with pretty much everything please&thankyou said.

I thought Admit Weekend was so-so; didn't make me love Stanford but didn't turn me off either. There were the requisite bonding activities (such as mini scavenger hunts around campus) and dances at night and some pretty cool talks that we could go to (or am I confusing this with NSO?). I stuck pretty closely to a few people while I was there, and I'm still good friends with one of them. What did strike me, though, was how friendly and welcoming everyone was; every time someone saw me with the red folder, they asked me how my visit was and if they could help in any way (this even happened in the bathroom at an eatery).

And, like please&thankyou... I LOVE Stanford now. I am so happy to be here (or THERE, since I'm home for the break). Each year, I've gotten more comfortable with the place and with myself, and I have become so much more grateful for where I go to school. Opportunities, people... =]
