Anybody go to the CSHP - capstone summer honors program

it is for rising seniors in the summer before senior year.

looks interesting. like a mix of school and summer camp.

might be a good way to test the waters!

My son went last summer and spent almost 5 weeks on the UA campus. He had no interest in going to the University of Alabama at that time. His plans were to apply at other schools, Vanderbilt, Emory, Stanford, Univ Pen etc.

He absolutely loved the Capstone Summer Honors Program. He took 2 classes Chemistry and Finite Mathamatics. The professors and teaching assistants were great and he finished both courses with an A. He received full college credit for both classes since it was essentially a full semester crammed into 4 weeks.

The students stay in the Honors Dorms which are all very nice. Each has its own private bedroom and a common living/dining area. My son was very impressed with the honors program and the opportunities it offers.
He will be part of the Honors College this fall and received a full tuition scholarship.

The school is definitely worth taking a serious look at.

Stoner Class of 2002, reporting in! :)

You'll love it -- it's great way to experience what college will be like, both socially and academically.

how much is school and how much is fun? my dd is not that interested if there isn't a good amount of fun included!

When I was there, we went to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and saw a play ("As You Like It", I think), as far as organized activities go. I think the fun in Capstone is that you get to make friends and have the freedom to do whatever you want (as long as you abide by the curfew).

How much is it, are there scholarships?

It's $1500, which includes tuition, housing, and some meal money.

Here's the website:

Honors College Web Site

Don't know the age of your d.

Consider the ADVANCE summer boarding school program for high schoolers in Natchitoches, La. You take a class for 3 weeks and can get HIGH SCHOOL credit for the class if your high school agrees.

There's a fair amount of good times associated with this program.

I applied for this summer (summer of May 2009). Does anyone know when they'll let us know if we got accepted?

I'm not sure, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a call. (Dr. Bebe Barefoot at bebe.barefoot@ua.edu or (205) 348-5506)

Good luck!

Thanks! I'll wait a few days before I call though...the deadline was only today so I don't want to seem too annoying.

Any scholarships availible? I know colleges like to make money off these kinds of programs, but I don't think I can pay 1.5k AND miss a month of work, but if it was cheaper, than maybe.

The deadline for the CSHP was March 30th so hopefully you guys will be receiving your acceptance letters soon. And Dr Bebe has actually resigned from the Honors College so I am not sure if she will be sending out the letters or not. I do know that she will be helping as far as transitioning the duties to her successor.

My son attended the CSHP and thought it was great. Six or seven hours of credit, a wide choice of classes, etc. Frankly, for that kind of credit + experience, we thought it was a bargain. He had a lot of fun, too. He is still in touch with some of the other students and they even had a reunion over Christmas holidays. The dorms and food are both so much better than what I remember from my college days that I was tempted to go back. I highly recommend this program.

I do understand that CSHP has been in a state of flux this year as they transition it from Dr. Barefoot to someone else at the University, but I urge you to be patient and have your child attend if they can manage it. Whether they end up at UA or not, it is a good taste of college life in a somewhat supervised environment. If you have questions, please post and I’ll try to check back and answer.

What is the usual response time after the deadline?

I sent in my paperwork and i have recieved no answer. I thought that i would have gotten an answer either way by now so i was wondering what the usual time is between the deadline and the reciept of the acceptance letter.???

Sorry, it’s been so long for me that I don’t remember when I got my letter. You may want to contact the person in charge to inquire.
