Anybody heard of Global Leadership Adventures?

It is a volunteering abroad program. Does anybody have any other information on it? I want to gather facts so I know it is safe. I'm just afraid of human trafficking. Thanks.

I went to Cape Town over the summer with GLA. It was the best experience of my life. I never once felt unsafe while there. Either on campus, during excursions or volunteering in the township.

Which location are you thinking of going to?

Is it a good program for actually learning the language of the country you are in, or are you most of the time speaking English?

I can only speak for the Cape Town program, but I think you get out of it what you put in.

I learned quite a bit of Xhosa. (My username says 'I love you. lol) There was a language class almost every morning. I also had more opportunities to speak it than some of the kids in the program. At the site where I volunteered we worked mostly with young children who didn't know much English, so each conversation was kind of half and half. Plus I learned a lot from them.
At the other service site they worked with teenagers who wanted to practice their English so they hardly spoke any Xhosa.

Plus it was really interesting to see and hear three different languages being spoken around you 24/7. (The campus we lived on operated in Afrikaans.)

But I'm sure at the other locations the languages were emphasized more.

I want to go to the one in Costa Rica.

GLA IS THE BEST EVER!!!!!!!! GLA is global leadership adventures. I went on one to costa rica this summer and it was truly the most amazing thing I could have ever done

yea, i went to ghana and it was incredible...my parents were freaked at first, but then cool i soundlike a freaking cliche, but yeah, life-changing program - really cool and smart and i liked volunteering most

i had a friend who went to Ghana with them this summer and absolutely loved it. being afraid of human trafficking is sort of ridiculous, they will definitely keep you safe.

So are any of you guys intend to attend the GLA camp2009?
Looks interesting to me.

Hello,

I went on a GLA (Global Leadership Adventures) programme last summer (2010) for 3 weeks to Ghana. It was absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it! Yes, I must admit I was a bit skeptical about travelling myself, but I can assure you that the programme is completely safe, the staff from abroad and in the programme country are extremely trustworthy and caring.

If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to contact any of us at GLA. Here is our facebook website where you can see pictures, and converse with programme directors of GLA and past students. I hope this was helpful!

Hi!

I went on a GLA trip to Costa Rica this summer, and it was the most incredible experience of my life. I would highly recommend GLA to anyone who was interested in traveling abroad for a summer. The unique GLA home base aspect really made me feel immersed in the culture of the country, rather than just a tourist. The mentors definitely encouraged us to push our limits, but I always felt safe. The experience was extremely rewarding, and I would be happy to answer any questions anybody has about the program.

hey! I was thinking of going with GLA to costa rica next summer, but did you get to do a lot of community service things? Because I really want to be able to help out.

@missyluvzya

We got to do 3 hours of community service a day, totaling to 45 hours over three weeks. I’m not sure what you mean by “a lot”, but those three hours I definitely felt like we were really helping. We volunteered in an extremely rural village, right on the border of Nicaragua. The kids loved it when we arrived, and sometimes they would wait outside of their houses for us and ride the rest of the way with us to school. We played soccer and taught English and helped to build a new cafeteria, and we were definitely all exhausted by the end of the day. It felt like a good amount of community service to me, we had plenty of time with the kids, and it left time for us to rest and do our other activities. We had spanish classes some afternoons, and also seminars (very informal, taught by locals) about Costa Rica, which were more interesting than I had expected.

I went on the Spanish and Service Adventure, and they’re doing it again this year, with a two week and a three week option (I went for three weeks). I would be happy to answer any other questions about the program that you have!

wow. It’s interesting that so many of the glowing replies about GLA are from very new members with a handful of posts. Just an observation.

I am planning to go to Peru with this program next summer, if I could only get the money…has anyone been on this specific program who can share insight into how the experience was?

@ nylecoj007

Yeah haha I see what you mean. I don’t work for GLA, but I kind of want to. I replied to so many posts about them because all I’ve wanted to do is talk about GLA since I got home, but I think my friends are sick of hearing about it :). And when I signed up to do the program in January, I couldn’t find a lot of reviews on the company, so I thought I would give my two cents.

@nylecoj007 - I was kind of thinking that too (even though I’m a pretty new member myself).

But I was also wondering about this program, but the Dominican Republic or the Costa Rica Spanish one.

@raptors was there anything in particular you wanted to know?

Hey I’m thinking of doing the Peru and the Galapagos GLA this summer. Its the South American expedition one, but I can’t seem to find a lot of information on it. Do you guys recommend just doing one of them? If so, which one? I can’t decide.

How did you raise money?
