Anybody in this position?

Hi guys,

I just found this forum, and I think I'll be visiting it quite often this year, as I have my mind set on going to graduate school in the US (don't know if it will finally happen, though).

I don't know if anyone is in a situation similar to mine. I stayed in my country of residence (Spain) for ungrad, and I find that the education that I'm getting is second-rate (at best) and lacking in many aspects. I was used to the American education system after living in the US for five years and completing my high school education at an international school with an American curriculum. When I enrolled in university here, I knew that teaching methods were old-fashioned and somewhat different from what I was accustomed to. However, never did I expect education in an industrialized country, member of the EU, to be so backwards.

Anyhow, my idea is to make up all these lost years with a Master's in the United States...My main obstacle is that not only do I need to get into the school, but it's also absolutely necessary that I get my tuition waived through a research grant, assistantship or fellowship. My family cannot afford to pay 40K or more for two years of schooling, and I'm majoring in Journalism, so my indebtment capacity is very limited. I know that this isn't going to happen at any big-name schools, but I'm not really looking for prestige. I just want a good education and a lot of freedom to pursue my interests.

So if any of you are in this situation or know of schools that are generous with international graduate students, please let me know. My areas of interest are Journalism, English, and Liberal Arts/Humanities.

Oh, and if there's anyone from Spain, please post...I'm dreading the moment when I'll have to face the university's bureaucracy and ask them for things they've never heard of such as recommendation letters in sealed envelopes and translated transcripts...It will definitely be an adventure.

Welcome to CC :). I am new too.

From what I've heard, it's not always possible to get full funding for master's programs, but PhD programs are fully funded.

Try posting your question in the graduate school forum as well since you will get more replies there. Most of the internationals here are undergrad applicants. Good luck!
