thanks avoidingwork.......anyone else have any personal insights to the team or its players?

The Cal Lacrosse team is composed of some very talented players. The majority of players on the team played in high school. A few come out each fall who have never played, but they are usually excellent athletes. The team plays in the USLIA, a league that consists of over 150 teams nation wide. The top teams in the league have rosters filled with players who could be playing at the D3 or D1 level. Cal plays many of these top teams each year, including national champions santa barbara and runner up sonoma state. Cal also has a stong rivalries with Cal Poly, USC, and BYU. After a national champoinship in 1998, and league championship in 2000, the Cal lax team fell on hard times. Third year coach Steve Dini has turned the program around as of late, and the 2006 team looks to be very strong. All starters return except for the goalie. All 6 offensive starters last year for cal were freshman/first year players for Cal. In short, playing for Cal involves hard work and dedication, but promises a very competetive and enjoyable experience for one of if not the oldest college lacrosse programs west of the Mississippi.

thanks callax-- I see that there is a recruiting form on the club lax page.....would the club lax team have any sway in admissions at all? I hadn't thought so until I saw this form.

Coaches have the ability to write letters of recomendation to admissions, and help with appeals, but do not have the ability to guarantee admission. Nevertheless, a player who expresses interest/proves his dedication to the sport on their application, and has strong marks, stands a good chance of getting accepted. There has been talk of the club sports program possibly being able to help with admissions in the future, though nothing is set yet. It makes sense to me that if someone wants to come to Cal and be a part of their club sports program, they should be given the same admission opportunities as someone who gets in for band or drama.

any word on the new coach?
