My son is interested in music performance. Just wondering if anyone is familar with Brandeis's music program. I see they have a combined orchestra with Wellsley. Thanks!

Similar results for Wellesley, but far fewer.

Realize these are BA’s not BM’s and while they may be fine for serious study of music academics and composition, I would seriously consider the depth of peer quality across all instruments, particularly if the intent is preprofessional preparation for a performance career.

A lot will depend on your son’s focus, and potentially the instrument.

The Lydian String Quartet is in residence at Brandeis and Brandeis used to offer a wonderful full tuition scholarship, The Leonard Bernstein Scholarship, but it has apparently been cancelled. There is an article in the Brandeis Justice (October 13, 2009) about the cancellation of the scholarship. You might want to take a look at it to see what past recipients have to say. Just google Brandeis Leonard Bernstein Scholarship.

You might want to pm Skie, an occasional poster here. She may be able to give you good info on studying music at Brandeis.

My son’s bassoon teacher had friends who went to Brandeis and were music majors about 8 years ago. He said they enjoyed the closeness of the people and that it was a strong music department.
We visited last year and heard the jazz band rehearse and it was a very good group. As I remember, there was an informal association with Berklee in Boston where you could take some classes.

My D is strongly considering Brandeis also as a music major. We have similar questions. My D is a serious flute player but does not want to attend a conservatory. She would like to major in music and another discipline as well.

For music history, theory and composition, Brandeis has one of the best programs in the country. Because of this, a music degree from Brandeis is well-respected everywhere. There is no performance degree, just a BA, but for a small school there are lots of performance opportunities and very good private teaching, especially in strings and voice. Strong choral program, good orchestra and serious chamber music. The facilities are nice, with a lovely concert hall, decent practice rooms and classrooms with wall-to-wall windows, full of light. The music professors are the finest anywhere and truly care about their students. It is a very friendly and welcoming place.
