Anybody know of a case where a 2400 did not get someone into HYPS?

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if it is possible to perfect the SAT but not get accepted into the world's best colleges. Not that this is my case, but is it ever the case.

What about other prestigious universities like Notre Dame, Michigan, Berkeley, Georgetown, Brown and the other ivies?

Yes. In fact, it is rumored that only (though “only” may not be appropriate, given the overall acceptance rates) about half of 2400ers are accepted to the most selective schools. An analysis of old CC results threads would probably yield a similar acceptance rate for such people. And certainly, this number is being inflated by the fact that those with 2400 on the SAT will tend to have better-than-average grades and Subject Test scores.

^Yes. I’ve seen it happen many times. Check individual school’s “Official Decisions” thread and you’ll see that sometimes even people with a perfect SAT score don’t get in.

Just go to the individual colleges’ web sites and see their reports- not just those people who post here.
What kids miss is: it’s more than your scores and gpa.

I know of no college that publishes this statistic.

I have heard Harvard admissions dean say that their admissions rate for 2400ers is between 40 and 50percent. Still high compared to average applicant, but not even half!

I do think most of them get into a top school, just not every top school.

A 2400 is definitely impressive, but an applicant needs to have more than a good score and GPA, because everybody who’s applying has those things (maybe not perfect scores, but close or very good ones)! You have to have a great interview, nice extracurriculars, special hooks, etc.

Much more surprising to me is reports that 2400ers get rejected by JHU, WashU, etc. No idea of the rates or whether it is Tufts syndrome in action.

^probably Tufts syndrome! I’m applying to JHU, hope I get in.

Yeah, they might not get into all, but I think that if a 2400 who had at least respectable stats otherwise would get into one of the HYPS. I’d say 85+% who apply would get in.

I believe Christiansoldier was denied acceptance at Harvard, Stanford, and another HYPSM despite having a 2400, 5 800’s on SATII’s, and upwards of twenty 5’s on AP tests.

What about a 36 on the ACT? Is that looked at as favorably as a 2400?

Christiansoldier also had a 36 on ACT…I think.

agree with aniger and aayaa1. they will get in to at least one very selective school, not necessarily all.

right. And one is all you need…

Ya. If you apply to all of HYPS with a 2400 and decent in grades and in e.c’s (not like a 3.4 gpa with only a couple of clubs), there’s a very minimal percentage that you’ll get into 3 and even maybe 2, but a very high percentage that you’ll get into 1.

I beg to differ. I know a few people who had perfect gpa’s, 2400’s, perfect sat 2’s and amazing extracurriculars and did not get into even one of those highly selective schools. I believe WashU was the highest one of them was accepted to. And on the other hand, my friend, who did not have the highest stats, though they did have a pretty high gpa and great ecs, was accepted EVERYWHERE. really, there is no “formula”. A 2400 does not guarantee admissions to any of these highly selective schools. But it does boost your chances, and it very give you a great shot at other not quite as selective schools.

I beg to differ ngstar. I don’t believe that you know a few people, I took that as 3 people, who had 4.0+ 2400 SAT, multiple SAT2s, and amazing ECs and the best school they got into was WUSTL, I take that as meaning the other 2 got into equal or lesser schools. I’m not trying to argue that 2400 guarantees you admissions anywhere, but perfect stats all around plus amazing extracurriculars increases your chances so much.

Pretty darned intimidating.
Also have seen (probably lookinginto a former thread on valedictorians,) that Prnceton rejected roughly 75-80%. Believe it was a few years old, last listing I found.
