from a cc to a UC you won't do well academically? I don't know about you guys, but about half the classes I have taken have been a complete joke--I had jr high classes harder than that. So are any of you worried that you might not do well? Or did you guys actually take challenging classes at your cc?

I took relatively hard classes at my CC, but I thought them to be much easier for me than my HS classes, not because of the heavy material and coursework, but because I was actually motivated (I got good grades in HS but I was lazy as hell, procrastinated, and that made everything 100x harder). A lot of my professors were TOUGH, some were UCLA and USC professors, some Stanford or Berkeley professional school graduates. And I found that a lot of my teachers actually wanted to teach, which made things easier for me (I can only imagine the same for UCLA). Of course, some of my classes were a complete joke, but for most, I had to study my ass off. I think it also depends on the school…?

The biggest thing I’m worried about (as far as grades go at UCs) is the +/- point system. I hate it with a passion.

i’m not worried about doing well academically per se, i’m sure i’ll be able to get the grades i want, i’m just worried how long it’s gonna take me to readjust to that level since yea, most of my cc classes have also been a joke…actually, i can’t think of a single one that was harder than anything i did in the last two years of high school…

^^ i agree about the +/- system, i have a 3.97 cuz i got one A-…if i was at almost any other cc it would still be a 4.0…

I took some pretty challenging classes at a CC. It depends on your professor SO MUCH.

glad i’m not alone on having joke classes. my first semester at cc i took a sociology class in which we literally saw videos every class. our quizzes we’re fill in the blank, and the answers were blatantly obvious. also, people were allowed to make up exams. and out of all the classes that i’ve taken, i’ve only had about 5 with midterms. and i agree about the +/- thing, so lame.

I’m really surprised that so many people found absurdly easy classes at CC. Granted I took Computer Science & Linguistics courses, but generally they posed at least some challenge and all of them had midterms. Even my easiest GE classes had some standards, although the number and length of essays required in classes such as English were absurdly low.

lomkh and ciaokarol, if you don’t mind spilling the beans what CC do you two go to?

I’m worried about the bad study habits CC has given me. my english honors class coinsisted of discussion (40%) and three 3 page essays (60%). I mean, is that really prep for UC? my polisci class has a 12 pager due at semester end, so that’s a little more like it. but I’m definitely avoiding it…great habits…

^ditto here. I thought I was the only one who thought school was unusually easy. Don’t get me wrong, I take the hardest classes available here (multivariable calc, physics, chem, etc) but so far they seem really easy when in reality they SHOULD be SUPER hard. I mean, math MUST be hard, it has to be. I’m not that smart, I know that. Nontheless, I’m super scared of getting my a$$ kicked when I transfer. The hardest class I took was actually intro to programing and that’s cause as a COMPLETE and UTTER beginner the learning curve is super steep. I totally had to study for it, but I loved it for that reason. It actually posed a challenge!

@nicolles

see, but you love challenge. i just procrastinate more.

Ahhh…procrastination my old friend…yeah, we go way back it and I…Alas, we will have to part ways unless I want my parents to disinherit me for wasting their money and flunking out…sorry pal!

ha…same here. guess i’ll have to nut up or shut up.

I’ve been to a 4 year before. I am not worried about this. CCC is difficult because the coursework places such a huge emphasis on memorization. 4 years place a huge emphasis on analysis. Analysis is something you can really do and work through. It’s a sort of a personal expression… And it’s really, really fun. If you guys somehow managed to bemotivated through CCC, then are are going to absolutely LOVE your UC. Just work on good study habits. You all need to believe in yourself and never once think you’re gonna fail. You guys will love it and I’m very excited for all your CCC students to experience the excitement of a 4 year!! You guys will do great!! Don’t even fret it!

aww. thanks for the inspiration mikei :)

I have the same concern. P.E in high school was more difficult than some of the classes I have taken at my CC. But I’m planning on working really hard over summer and maybe take some classes to improve my work. (writing workshops etc.)

I’m not scared because I know I can do it. I’m only nervous to see if I can make the transition fast enough. I think I can do it because once I’m at UCLA my mindset will be that I am studying with the best so I need to step my game up. Competition brings out the best in me.

I’m more worried about getting internships and such.

@silicon i go to de anza, so there’s just soo many classes to choose from (especially if you have priority registration :]) so as a 1-yr transfer i was taking quite a few classes which i had decided to balance out by making sure they’re really easy…lol, maybe not the smartest thing for me to have done…

i agree 100%

no, ill prolly get straight A’s
