I will be taking Organic Chem next semester. I've heard lots of horror stories about this course of half of the class dropping and the others getting C's. I am quite scared myself.

To remedy this, I plan to do a little bit of studying this summer to maybe ease the load. I plan to work on the nomeclature and perhaps remember some of the compounds that are an exception. So, I need to know which textbook willl be used. I searched Rice's bookstore and found this text:

"Organic Chemistry, Fourth Edition : Structure and Function
by K. Peter C. Vollhardt, Neil E. Schore"

But this text was used in Fall of 2004. I know me local college actually updated their textbook in Spring 2005. Would you think that Rice did the same?

No AP Chem; instead, I completed college classes in Gen Chem 1 and 2. THey were at a community college, so hopefully I am prepared for Rice.

Are you a sophomore at RIce? Doesn't AP Chem only cover the first semester of college chemistry?

I kind of hope that it isn't the same book -- looks kind of old. THough I know I shjouldn't be judging a book by its cover. The one that local colleges are using here are is pretty nice, brand new.

Are you doing anything to prepare for o chem?

AP Chem covers all of freshman chem... At least, it'd better...! Otherwise, I graduated without having the requisite second semester of chemistry and nobody noticed.

I thought that AP Chem only covers first semester, guess I was wrong. So did you come in freshman year taking o chem? How was it? Did you find it difficult adjusting to the college atmosphere with such a tough course?

I read your other posts as well saying that you are a grad student at UIIC. What kind of degree are you pursueing there? Why did you not choose to do the 5 yr M.Eng at Rice?
