aren’t you allowed to take classes at Amherst, while attending smith? (i too would like to see the stats of successful transfer admits)

Yes, we can take classes at Amherst, but you have to go through a difficult registration process (plus scheduling is difficult) and can only take a maximum of two classes per semester at Amherst. I like the people at Amherst a lot better and the bus ride over there is horrible.

well I wish you the best of luck, are u considering transfer to any other colleges as well, or just Amherst?

I am thinking about applying as a sophomore transfer but have a generally poor high school record (Cs for the first 3 years, all As and some Bs the last) and emailed admissions trying to find out if I would be a competitive transfer applicant after at least a year of academic excellence at my safety. Unfortunately I haven’t received a response yet. When I emailed Hampshire, however, I got a very thoughtful and encouraging reply. Umass is next!

Anyone know of poor HS/excellent College GPA transfers making it in to Amherst?

^ Personally, no, but a truly excellent college transcript alongside compelling essays will overcome any infelicities on a high school transcript.

AGuzman, check out the general transfer thread. It’s chock full of the information you’re looking for :)

AGuzman,
I transferred into Amherst and my high school grades were terrible. The catch is I am a non-traditional student and high school was a long time ago for me. According to the admissions rep I spoke to during my application period, the amount of weight placed on your high school transcript varies relative to your age. Typically, unique life experience, combined with two strong years at another college or university, makes up for (or completely erases) a poor high school transcript. In my case, I did not even have to submit my high school transcript.

Thank you for the replies, I feel like working that much harder in the fall :).

Very nice jaykoblives!

In all honesty, your latest post was very encouraging. I didn’t do well in High School but I took two years off to travel the country with a leadership training and character development program. Now I’m at a CC and I’ve done considerably better. Do you recommend anything in particular for the transfer application process?

has anyone heard from amherst yet? I’m still waiting (with little to no hope, considering the odds)

I received an email saying that I was rejected about three weeks ago… you should call the admissions office.

asdfad123123 did you get accepted? I’m considering transferring as well from Mount Holyoke.

Smith girl did you get accepted???

I’ve applied for transfer admission from a CC as well. I’m getting a little antsy hearing from Amherst since they were my first deadline…

4.0 GPA 50-something credits?
Didn’t submit SAT scores, they were mediocre at best.
Phi Theta Kappa (chapter President), Student Govt. VP, Part-time job at college and another at a bookstore (store just closed :(), All-State Academic Team

My high school grades were pretty lousy. Unfortunately, I’m only 20 years old so that may hold some weight.

Is anyone else a Jack Kent Cooke nominee? I wonder when those winners will be notified…

Hello!

I have also applied as a transfer applicant for fall 2011. Actually, I have completed the first year of my college in another country. I am not sure if they even consider international students for transfer admissions.

Does any have any idea about that?

Oh my god.

I got an email titled “Amherst College Decision Notice.” I got in. I was speechless. I actually double checked to make sure it came from an Amherst email because I was pretty sure it was some kind of joke. I was rejected from Wesleyan last week… so I was sure that Amherst would deny me too. I still cannot believe this!

Has anyone else recieved any word? Hada were you able to talk to someone about being an international transfer?

Congrats AshMarie! I was accepted as a transfer for Fall 2011 too. I’m kind of still in shock. Have you heard back from financial aid/transfer credit?

Oh, and I’m from a CC as well! Awesome :)

Hi MIA, it’s nice to see another CC transfer! I recieved my FA and credit information 4-5 days ago. I’ll be on track to graduate in January of 2014. :)

Amherst has some great programs for CC transfers, like the ‘welcome dinner’ during orientation week and a transfer student alliance. But I am concerned that because there are so few, transfer students (especially those coming from community colleges) may have trouble adjusting to Amherst life. Does anyone on the board have experience being or knowing a transfer?
