I’m rising senior and got very good GPA and test scores. I’m planning to apply to Yale as my early decision. However, I have difficulty writing personal statement, feeling frustrated. Does anybody have the same problem?
Don’t stress about it. I experienced quite a few writing blocks during the application process too, and here are some of the things that I did:
-Sit down and just write down things that interest you. These can be extracurricular activities, hobbies, your dog, whatever. Write down whatever you think of. Go through what you’ve written down and write down any experiences, feelings etc. each one reminds you of. Keep going until you’re tired of it, and review your list to see if anything can be used in your essay.
-Go for a run. I’m not really sure why, but I found that not thinking about the essay helped me come up with some great ideas that I ended up using.
-Keep a pen or something on you, so if you ever come up with an idea, you can jot it down before you forget it. One of my best essays was inspired by two words I saw while scrolling through social media.
Now, if you mean you are struggling with the Yale supplementary essay specifically since it’s so broad, try taking a look at the essays for other schools. I applied to Yale using an expanded version of an essay I had previously written for another college.
